The Shizigou Formation is identified as one of the U-bearing strata in the Qigequan area. The intermediate-acid igneous rocks of the Qimantagh area in the East Kunlun orogenic belt are the main sedimentary source of the Shizigou Formation, which are also a reliable source for U mineralization. The paleoclimate was primarily characterized by an arid environment during the sedimentation of the Shizigou Formation. The carrier water evolved in an oxidizing environment and was composed of freshwater to weak saline water.
The Cenozoic strata are well-developed in the area. From bottom to top, the exposed strata at Qigequan are respectively the Shizigou and Qigequan Formations. The Shizigou Formation is composed of sandstones with variable grain sizes, including medium-grained, fine-grained, and argillaceous sandstone and mudstone. Uranium orebodies occur as tabular layers within the sandstones of the Shizigou Formation, at a burial depth of approximately 250 m below the surface. The stratum that overlays the Shizigou Formation is the Qigequan Formation, which consists of gray conglomerate, exhibiting unconformity contact with the Shizigou Formation. The Shizigou Formation is overlying on the Upper Youshashan, Lower Youshashan, Upper Ganchaigou, and Lower Ganchaigou Formations, all of which are rich in hydrocarbon resources.
