The metasediments that host auriferous quartz veins at the Byumba deposit belong to the Bulimbi Formation of the Pindura Group. Structurally the strata are, situated in the Byumba synclinorium. The timing of sedimentary deposition is estimated between 1420 and 1375 Ma. In the Byumba synclinorium and the Rutongo anticline, the Bulimbi Formation has an approximate thickness of 1300 meters. Lithologically, the Bulimbi Formation consists of graphite- and pyrite-rich homogeneous black shales, intercalated by grey metapelites and beige metasandstones. [[1]
