The Solway Coast National Landscape is a distinctive and expansive coastal landscape along the northern edge of Cumbria, facing the Solway Firth on the border with Scotland. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1964 and renamed a National Landscape in 2023, it is valued for its wide open horizons, strong sense of remoteness, and close connection between land, sea, and sky. The area is characterised by low-lying coastal plains, saltmarshes, sand flats, raised beaches, and quiet rural farmland, with scattered villages and long views across the firth to the hills of south-west Scotland.

Geologically, the Solway Coast is shaped largely by relatively recent processes, with much of the landscape formed from Quaternary glacial and post-glacial deposits. Sands, silts, clays, and gravels laid down by retreating ice sheets and fluctuating sea levels dominate the coastal zone, creating extensive intertidal flats and saltmarshes that continue to evolve under the influence of tides and sediment movement. Inland, raised marine terraces and glacial tills reflect former sea levels and ice limits.
