The core ZK2893 is from the Thakhek mining area that is located at the northeastern margin of the Sakon Nakhon Basin. It uncovered about 595.40 m sediments, including the 8.6 m sandstone beds of the Nam Noy Formation of the Khorat Group at the bottom, the 529.5 m evaporite series of Thangon Formation at the middle and 0.8 m of Quaternary unconsolidated clastic sediments at the top, respectively. Three distinct evaporitic cycles of the Thangon Formation have been observed in this core and each cycle mainly comprised the lower evaporites unit and the upper clastic unit. Cycle I included a pure clastic unit of red and greenish mudstone in the upper part and grayish anhydrite in the lower part; cycle II comprised a red mudstone and halite unit that both had interbedded anhydrite; and cycle III was characterized by a clastic unit of red mudstone, interbedded with halite and salt unit of halite, with an anhydrite layer at the base and potash layer at the upper part.
