Heights Quarry works exposures of the Great Limestone for aggregate, and is developed on the former site of the underground Heights Mine. The old underground workings have long been inaccessible for the most part, but recent quarry operations have exposed portions of the Heights South and West Cross veins, once again enabling the occasional recovery of specimens.

Extraction of limestone at Heights Quarry (above Heights Mine) is carried out by stripping back soils and overburden and blasting the exposed rock in sections. Blasts are designed to produce maximum fragmentation of the rock to reduce secondary breaking and so that it is manageable for an excavator to load it into a dump-truck. The blasted rock is transported by dump-truck to the processing plant in the south east corner of the site for crushing and screening. Approximately half of the material extracted is used as an aggregate for concrete manufacture with the remaining portion used as road-stone, the majority of which is coated as asphalt.

The current leaseholders of the 60 hectare quarry, Aggregate Industries UK Ltd, have planning permission for extraction until 2042 with restoration by 2043. In 2019 they submitted a proposal for a 12.27 hectare north-western extension to the quarry to allow limestone extraction at both the existing quarry and extension area until 2046 with a further year for restoration.
