Köppen climate type:
Karst bauxite exposures show variable sizes (e.g., Las Mercedes, the largest deposit in the district, is ~10 km2 in area) and thicknesses, with bauxitic profiles ranging from a few to several tens of meters. As particularly evident in historical mining pits such as Las Mercedes and Aceitillar, most bauxite deposits lack sedimentary overburden and display blanket morphologies that fill karst depressions, interrupted by sporadic carbonate pillars of bedrock limestone. In smaller bauxite occurrences and indices, karst bauxites manifest as pocket-like accumulations and infills within irregular, intricate tunnel networks of the karst system. The bauxitic material is reddish brown, fine grained, and mostly unconsolidated. A distinctive feature at the outcrop scale in the KM-30 deposit (“El Turco” in Villanova-de-Benavent et al., 2023) is the prominent occurrence of REY phosphates, readily visible to the naked eye as millimeter- to centimeter-thick yellow veins crosscutting the bauxite matrix. These veins are commonly associated with thinner, black Mn oxyhydroxide veinlets.
