The late Oligocene – middle Miocene calc-alkaline to shoshonitic volcanic belt in northern and central Aegean Sea includes, Lesvos Island. The volcanism of the broad Lesvos area was followed by the development of hydrothermal systems and the deposition of quartz veins hosting gold, silver and base metal mineralization in the northern part of Lesvos Island and specifically in Megala Therma (Argenos prospect) and Mithimna areas. The quartz veins are hosted within Miocene shoshonitic volcanic rocks, and have been formed by the filling of extensional fault systems with NNE-SSW and NW-SE directions. The quartz veins are associated with silicic, propylitic and argillic alteration of the lavas.
