Winnebago County is underlain by Cambrian to Ordovician sedimentary rocks which dip gently east off the Wisconsin Arch. The Ordovician rocks are dominated by carbonates, which are widely quarried for crushed and building stone. Several quarries in the Oshkosh area, such as the Lutz Quarry, are particularly well known for well-crystallized vug minerals including calcite, marcasite, sphalerite and other minerals. Glacial drift covers much of the bedrock. Careful hunting can yield native copper nuggets, banded iron formation, jasper, "Lake Superior" agates and other interesting material from the glacial deposits. The Weis Earth Science Museum on the University of Wisconsin - Fox Valley campus in Menasha features excellent displays, with an emphasis on Wisconsin minerals and geology.
