The Alpha-Gravelotte Mine is situated 1.5 kilometres north of Gravelotte and is the largest of the antimony deposits of the Murchison greenstone belt. The Alpha-Gravelotte mineralization takes the form of stibnite-rich reefs within a carbonate-rich host rock. The ore bodies dip steeply, largely parallel to the axial planes of isoclinally folded country rocks. The most important Gravelotte (near surface) and Alpha (at depth) ore bodies are associated with the tight to isoclinal, steeply plunging Alpha-Gravelotte fold, with the better mineralisation concentrated in what are thought to be cymoidal structures related to a major shear zone along the Antimony Line. A number of mineralized veins and fractures branch from the main bodies.

The main ore mineral of the Alpha-Gravelotte Mine is stibnite. Lesser amounts of berthierite occur together with varying, but smaller, amounts of gersdorffite, ullmanite, gudmundite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and scheelite. Native gold and aurostibite are important constituents. Native antimony is developed within the Flat Reef where mineralised chloritic talc-carbonate schists have been altered to a dark serpentinitic assemblage by the intrusion of a dolerite dyke. The antimony occurs as grey crystalline stibnite and its oxidation products stibiconite and senarmontite, associated with light-coloured quartz, in lenticular interbedded veins varying from several centimetres to six metres in width. (Cairncross and Dixon, 1995)
