The occurrence of antimony deposits in Archaean rocks is rare, with most other deposits occurring in younger Phanerozoic rocks. However, minor stibnite mineralisation is frequently observed in Archaean lode gold deposits and small, but nevertheless significant, antimony enrichment haloes are often characteristic of lode gold deposits. This association between Archaean gold and antimony is also true of the Murchison antimony deposits which were worked for gold by the early explorers, a practise which still continues today.

The history and discovery of antimony in the Murchison range is inextricably linked to that of gold. The metal was discovered and worked along with gold, but in view of the greater importance of gold at the time, the antimony received only minor attention. During a short-lived gold rush in 1888-1891, most of the gold and antimony mineralisation known today was discovered.
