The PGB, located west of the MGB, is an elongated tectono–metallogenic belt, trending NE, 120 km long and 20 km wide. The PGB is, lithostratigraphically, divisible into two units. The lower unit, mainly ultramafic to mafic igneous rocks, is further subdivided into the Mothiba, Eersteling, Vrischgewaagd and Ysterberg Formations. The upper unit, the Uitkyk Formation, ∼1000 m thick, is undivided and comprises mainly siliciclastic rocks.
The PGB produced approximately 3,910 kg (∼3.9 t) Au from intermittent production spanning from 1907 to the 1990's. Most of the production came from the Easterling Mine and Zandrivier Mine. The only recent gold resource estimation was done in 1996, predating both SAMREC and NI 43–101 reporting codes, and pertains to the Easterling Mine. The reported measured and indicated gold resources were 0.6 Mt (∼ 4.2 t) and 2 Mt for inferred gold resources (∼ 10.7 t).
