The Halkyn (District) United Mines Company was formed from the amalgamation of nine old lead/zinc mines mining companies and two drainage companies in 1928 They, and many other mines in the area, were unwatered by the the 10 mile Milwr drainage tunnnel that runs from Bagillt on the Dee estuary to Cadole near Mold and the 5 mile Halkyn drainage tunnel.

The main access was via an old shaft (Olwyn Goch - OS SJ201677) that was enlarged to 12 by 12 ft 6 ins and deepened to 490 ft when the drainage tunnel reached the workings. The bottom of the shaft reached 27 ft below tunnel level.

In 1939, Pilkingtons began excavating large quantities of the high-grade limestone of the mine for glass making, chiefly from the area to the west of Olwyn Goch shaft. Prior to this, Olwyn Goch shaft was chiefly used for raising men and materials, with Pen-y-Bryn Shaft being used for winding ore and materials.

The final shift took place on 10 December 1986. Although the office buildings remain at Olwyn Goch together with a few milling sheds, the headframe and 1930s winding gear was moved to the National Trust visitors centre at the Dolaucothi gold mine in mid-Wales.
