Name(s) in local language(s):
Campo Padella, Capranica, Complesso vulcanico di Vico (Lago di Vico), Provincia di Viterbo, Lazio, Italia
Volcanic ejecta within an explosive breccia belonging to one of the pyroclastic flow units (ignimbrite "C") of the Vico volcanic complex at Campo Padella locality (area around Strada Campo Padella and Strada Cacchieto), northwest of Capranica.
Campo Padella is the type locality for hellandite-(Ce), that has been found inside an ejectum, whose host rock can be classified as an
alkali-syenite. The ejectum is massive and fine-grained and is composed of abundant K-feldspar (Or70Ab30), some plagioclase (Ab85An15), and minor fluorophlogopite (F-rich biotite), augitic clinopyroxene, titanite, and magnetite as main phases; there are also several accessory phases including zircon, fluorapatite, allanite, and Th-, U-, REE-bearing phosphates and silico-phosphates close to minerals of the monazite group.
Hellandite-(Ce) occurs inside miarolitic cavities resulting from the interlocked texture of the feldspars and is typically associated with vonsenite, helvite, baddeleyite, vicanite-(Ce), and britholite-(Ce). Crystals of hellandite-(Ce), up to 0.3–0.4 mm in size, are euhedral, transparent, and light-green or brownish (Oberti et al., 1999). Hellandite-(Ce) has also been observed inside the groundmass of the ejectum; in this case, it fills voids and fractures inside the rock and is systematically intergrown with britholite-(Ce), with hellandite rimming britholite in all observed cases (Della Ventura et al., 1999).
From a chemical point of view, it is considered a (Th,U)-rich and Y-poor variety (Oberti et al., 1999). Detailed studies on samples of this non-metamict hellandite and from other localities of Latium have brought about a redefinition of the hellandite group and the new nomenclature rules (Oberti et al., 2002).
