Proterozoic skarn iron ore belonging to the Bråstad-Omholt Mining Field W of Arendal. The Bråstad Fe mines were among the largest and most important of the Fe-mines in Arendal municipality. It was closed down in 1975. Most of the mining dumps have now been completely removed to be used for road construction. Many of the mines are now filled with much garbage.
The mining area covers 600 x 600m and more than 40 mines and prospects are registered.
The mines, shafts, and prospects belonging to the Bråstad Mines are concentrated in 2 main areas:
- The oldest ones located between Slottetjenn and Bergtjenn, among these are Katte, Østre Zugge, Vestre Zugge, Tre Brødre, Hvalfisk and Lille Langgruve 1 Mines.
- The other area is located more to the SW. Among these are the Hesterumpe, Gamle Langgruve, Gyldenløwe, Antoinette, Erlands gruve, Skoggruva, Ovnsgruva, Treschow, Charlotte Mines, and a large number of smaller prospects.
The mining periods:
NOTE (Ronald Werner, 2021):
I registered a number of iron mines in this area based upon the information in the reference mentioned below. The information is consistent with what can be seen on the relief map at hoydedata.no regarding the location of the mines, but I am not so sure about the measurements presented in this municipal report. There seems to be some inconsistency with regard to what can be seen on the relief map.
