About SiderazotHide

Formula:
FeNx to Fe3N1.33
x ~ 0.25-0.5; the epsilon-type structure
Colour:
White, silver-white
Lustre:
Metallic
Specific Gravity:
3.147
Crystal System:
Hexagonal
Name:
From Greek "sideros", iron, plus "azoton", nitrogen, referring to its composition.
Modern confirmation of the chemical composition was lacking for a long time.
It was considered by some to be a "grandfathered" species, but very inadequately described (http://www.mindat.org/mesg-7-73751.html).

Redefined as a valid species by Bette et al. (2021) on a sample of vescicular lava from the Natural History Museum, London, UK, originally collected by Orazio Silvestri during the Etna eruption of 1874.
