Named in honour of Liu Dongsheng (刘东生) (22 November 1917, Liaoning Province, China – 6 March 2008), also known as Tung-sheng Liu. He was a Chinese geologist and paleontologist at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was known as the "Father of Loess", loess being one of his specialties.
