We welcome papers which contribute to a better understanding of the road network and its place within the wider context of Roman studies, whether in the UK or internationally. The most important work taking place in Roman road studies will find a home here. The Journal includes reports of excavations, lidar discoveries, designation of 'new' routes through an expanded Margary system, and a range of peer-reviewed scholarly articles exploring the wider context of roads as related to military and civilian activity, forts, planning, surveying and all aspects of Roman life. Itinera also contains a section of shorter entries, Roman Roads in 20XX summarising all relevant fieldwork and discoveries in Britain from the previous year, even those with negative results.

Papers are invited (with a deadline of 15 November 2026) for consideration for the sixth volume, which is expected to be published in May / June 2027. If intending to submit a paper, please ensure that you read all the guidance in the Notes for Contributors, which also explain the submission process and format required, and are available at the links below right. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are thinking of submitting a paper. Contact the Editor by emailing itinera[AT]romanroads.org

Volume VI of the paperback edition of Itinera, the world’s only peer reviewed journal dedicated to Roman road studies, is now available for pre-order (delivery mid July). Like last year, Volume VI is an excellent volume with eight papers, plus Roman Roads in 2025 which itself runs to ninety-two pages. We have maintained our policy of at least one paper from beyond the shores of Britannia, this year with a paper describing the multinational Itiner-e project.

Members receive digital versions as part of their membership, and these digital versions are made open access after 12 months. Still, there’s nothing quite like having the physical copy on your bookshelf. You can still purchase copies of earlier volumes, although Vol. I is now sold out. We may reprint a short run of Vol. I in the near future - email itinerasales[AT]romanroads.org to ask to join our waiting list
