Mimir 1 [Space Inventor]

Mimir-1 is a Norwegian technology demonstration satellite developed, owned, and operated by Space Norway as an in-orbit laboratory for testing new concepts in communications, and navigation. The satellite was built and integrated by OHB Sweden, while both payloads were developed in Norway. Mimir-1 is intended to provide flexible and cost-effective access to space for technology demonstrations by industry, research institutions, and government organizations.

The satellite weighs 93 kg, has a wingspan of 2.3 metres and a planned operational lifetime of seven years.

Unlike conventional satellites with fixed mission objectives, Mimir-1 serves as a reprogrammable development platform. Its primary payload is a Software Defined Radio (SDR) equipped with multiple antennas covering a broad frequency range. The SDR is supported by an onboard computer that can be reprogrammed from the ground after launch, allowing new experiments and applications to be uploaded throughout the mission. This flexibility enables rapid testing and validation of new space-based services without requiring dedicated satellite missions.

The first demonstration mission supports the development of satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) services. On behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA), Space Norway is testing IoT communications in new frequency bands while developing a user interface for planning and executing experiments involving both the satellite and associated ground terminals. The platform is designed to accommodate additional experiments from external users, allowing companies and academic institutions to validate technologies in orbit before committing to the development of dedicated spacecraft.

A secondary payload carries a VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) communications terminal for maritime applications. VDES provides two-way digital communications between ships, satellites, and coastal stations, extending the capabilities of the widely used Automatic Identification System (AIS), which is limited to one-way transmissions. The payload contributes to ESA's multinational VDES development program by demonstrating satellite-supported maritime data exchange and evaluating future operational services.
