It was a fine weekend, filled with art and good beer and great pizza and bonfires and tamales and Black Sabbath Casserole and endless pancakes and a solid bruncheon with tempeh and goat cheese (I must be hungry, I think it's lunchtime...)
I went morel hunting at Stony Creek yesterday evening. Didn't find any mushrooms, but I came across some fiddlehead ferns that I was almost certain were edible-- but I wasn't 100% positive, so I only picked a handful and took them home to review on the google machine, just to be sure. Turns out they were Lady Ferns-- one of the two most common edible fiddleheads. YES! I've eaten fiddleheads a couple times before, but I've never harvested them myself, and I was proud to have identified them. That was a great feeling. I blanched and buttered them- they taste somewhat like a cross between asparagus and green beans, but in my opinion, they are even more tender and flavorful than asparagus. I found out after that the stalk can also be harvested-- I only plucked the heads-- and that the batch was just a shade premature, but it only affected the quantity, not the quality, and I was trying to err on the safe side because once the ferns begin to unfurl they are mildly toxic and can give you a nasty tummy ache.
I forgot to take pictures, but they basically looked like this:

Yum.
Know what else sounds good? Fried dandelions. I really, really, really want to fry up some dandelions.
That wind is a-whippin' out the window...
I have some letters to finish writing.
