Lansing, Lucid Dreams, Morels
Bullet-point thoughts.
I spent the weekend in Lansing, meeting my partner's family. I am certain that we both began that trip with some mild anxiety and anticipating awkwardness, but everything went smoothly. Her mom does cartwheels in the side yard and has a huge collection of pretty polished rocks, which she was delighted to show me. Her dad didn't say too much (Katherine says that's normal) but he shook my hand and was cordial all the same. I'd met her sister once before, but we stayed at her house for a few days this time, and I enjoyed that. Her parent's cat loathes us both by default, but her sister's cat made friends with me real fast. The tree she planted when she was twelve started making helicopter seeds this year, and he's having a Mar Mitzvah soon. We also visited her grandma at the nursing home, briefly, though she seemed to think I was Katherine's friend from High School, and we couldn't convince her otherwise. She asked if she could call me "Keeper of the Birds". I said I didn't mind.
I've had two lucid dreams in the past week-- both the results of waking up briefly at an early hour and then falling back asleep again. This is pretty exciting, as my lucid dreams are usually very sparse. Flying is my favorite-- I'm getting better at it, but I definitely still need practice. I've found that a running start helps, and confidence helps, too-- positive thinking, peter pan style. I've started altering small things, like colors and the weather, and it's difficult and takes a lot of focus, but it works. I keep trying to will really specific things into being, like people that I want to talk to or hang out with, but I can't seem to do that yet-- when it doesn't work, it usually wakes me up for some reason. I really wish all my dreams were lucid. I live for that shit.
I've acquired (tentatively) 5 new pen pals this week, thanks to livejournal. Huzzah! One of them is going to plan-it-x fest, so I'll even get to meet hir (they are genderqueer, I'm not sure if there's a preferred pronoun). My long-time pen pal from Grand Rapids is going to be there too. On that note, I really need to pick up more blank tapes.
I have an interview at Starbucks on Monday. It's definitely not my favorite establishment in the world, but I am down to my last 7 dollars and odd change from the tax returns I've been living off of, and I really need a job. I want to move back home to Detroit by the end of Summer, St. Clair Shores is killing me. Ugh. Please keep yr fingers crossed.
It's time to go mushroom hunting! Dryad's Saddle is almost certainly out. Morels usually pop out at the end of April/early May, but with this unseasonably warm weather I'm certain they've started early. If I don't go soon I'll miss everything and have to wait for the Autumn harvest. I also need to brush up on my tree identification- I've practically forgotten what Elm, Ash and Poplar trees look like. Ah, yes, and they like apple trees too. I wonder if I should peruse an apple orchard...?
It is so nice out, and of course I've whittled the day away in a bathrobe. I should really get off my ass and take care of some things, but most likely I'll just end up playing board games with Billy.
