Just Off the Key of Reason

I promised myself I would keep updating dreamwidth (I'm still working on getting back to reading my reading list regularly, but posting myself helps with that).

So, I had to drop out of Yuletide this year, do to the aforementioned cat-induced concussion (see here for details, if you missed them)

But I still got THREE gifts, all of which I loved!

My main gift:

New Year's Day, 1992 (3219 words) by CatalenaMara
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: White Nights (1985)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Darya Greenwood/Raymond Greenwood/Nikolai "Kolya" Rodchenko
Characters: Darya Greenwood, Raymond Greenwood, Nikolai "Kolya"
Additional Tags: Polyamory, The fall of the Soviet Union
Summary:

The Soviet Union has fallen. In their home in NYC, Darya Greenwood, Raymond Greenwood, and Nikolai "Kolya" Rodchenko begin to absorb this historic change. Polyamory.

A lovely post-film fic about the fall of the Soviet Union.

This is, shockingly, the FIRST fic for this relationship on AO3 (the only other use of the tag is for AurumCalendula's brilliant vid, Plan the Escape, but I really hope it won't be the last, because it really is such the perfect OT3.

If you're unfamiliar with White Nights, it's a cold war drama/thriller/dance movie from 1985 starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, Helen Mirren and Isabella Rossellini, and choreographed by Twyla Tharp. It's worth watching for the dance sequencs alone, including a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImzkWZkaIIM">one of the best onscreen dance scenes of all time, and a completely glorious scene in which Baryshnikov and Hines attempt to out-workout each other, but is also just a good movie.

It stars Mikahil Baryshnikov as a russian ballet dancer who defected to the west, who accidentally ends up back in the USSR after the plane he's on is forced to make an emergency landing, and Gregory Hines as an American tap dancer/Vietnam vet/defector who is now rather regretting many of his choices, except the choice to marry his wife (Rossellini).

And two treats:

Soyons Unis (1860 words) by NervousAsexual
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Casablanca (1942)
Rating: General Audiences

Additional Tags: Day At The Beach, Depression, Anxiety, Post-Canon, Cuddling & Snuggling, Polyamory, And/Or Queerplatonic Relationships, Unusual Flavors of Ice Cream, Long-Term Relationship(s), Angst with a Happy Ending, Hopeful Ending, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Maybe even when the sky is clear and the sun is warming his bones he's felt the rain and the darkness too often to enjoy it.

---

Rick struggles with the transient nature of happiness.

A BRILLIANT post-canon/post-war Casablanca OT3 story, which is again only the second use of the tag on AO3.

A Calling (1103 words) by Lenore
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Amena & Murderbot (Murderbot Diaries), Dr. Mensah & Murderbot (Murderbot Diaries)
Characters: Amena (Murderbot Diaries), Dr. Mensah (Murderbot Diaries), Murderbot (Murderbot Diaries), Asshole Research Transport (Murderbot Diaries)
Additional Tags: Family Feels, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Amena finds her purpose in life and so does Murderbot.

An incredible story about Murderbot and Amena and Doctor Mensah, family, and accidentally becoming a parent.

I didn't read as much Yuletide fic this year as I usually do, because of the concussion, but what I did read was great, and I feel so blessed to have gotten three wonderful gifts.
