Poll: Rate My Glasses
Saturday, 23 May 2026 10:23 am( Looking and polling )
I’m seeing more progress pride flags flying in my neighborhood. In the poll, I’m using “queer” in the broadest possible sense: any (sexual or gender) (orientation or preference). The poll is anonymous—even I can’t see who voted how.
When you see this flag flying on an unknown residence, what meaning do you take away?
Someone queer lives there
36 (51.4%)
Someone who lives there has a queer family member
20 (28.6%)
Someone lives there and wishes to show support for queer folks, without any indication of the resident’s queer status
57 (81.4%)
Someone thinks the flag is pretty
2 (2.9%)
Someone wants to say, “let’s queer the universe, motherfuckers, cause the status quo is woeful.”

Ticky?
My mother and her father had outstanding bushy eyebrows, which I sadly didn’t inherit. MyGuy, you will not be surprised to learn, has eyebrows so luxuriant that he trims them.
But after menopause, my body hair changed. I now have one wild hair in my right eyebrow, silver white and standing proud (as we slashers often say). I'm happy to have it! But I also have thick, black whiskers under my chin. I think of them as my goat hairs--same location as the caprine version, and just as thick. They sting when they grow in, and I eagerly await the moment when they're long enough to pluck with a 5-inch surgical tweezer.
And you?

We've had a warm fall so far -- no frost yet! MyGuy and I live on the edge, so we didn't turn on our heat until last night (39°F/4°C). Which led me to wonder about your relationship to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
Thanks to
sara, I watched some excellent Baroque chamber music. The performers, as is customary in the U.S., wore formal clothing: a black suit with white shirt and black tie; a black floor-length dress. All performers wore matte black face masks. Which raises a vital question -- how should we coordinate our mask colors with the rest of our outfits?

Adobe figured out how to market to The Youth: deploy that ubiquitous generic word that is actually their trademarked brand and make it into a free camera.

The business model is selling storage on Creative Cloud, and since you’re here anyway, can we interest you in every possible graphic design tool?
Built-in "AI" filters optimize portraits, selfies, landscapes, and food. Also pop art, Billie Eilish Blōhsh, celestial skies, Pride spectra and many many more. Totally Instagram-ready.
I used Photoshop 1.0 when I worked at a desktop publishing service bureau in 1990. That was fully thirty years ago which breaks my brain.
As this selfie shows, the Photoshop Camera filters rewind me to 2000, showing a lightly-wrinkled white woman wearing a coral hoodie, thick glasses, and COVID-copious randomly-curling short pepper-and-salt brown hair.
My hair is a big shift, as I’ve been barbering sleekly short since age 23. What do you think of the longer look?

I'm thrilled that Markdown simplifies formatting your DW posts has proved popular and helpful. I didn't explore all Markdown's features to keep it short. I regret that now. I'm drafting a "Markdown: the sequel" post with the remaining features. In a better timeline, I would have written "Markdown: the novel," integrating the sequel stuff in the first post. I want to maximize reference utility for DW users in the next decade. Three ways to do this occur to me, and I bet you have a better idea.
When I prepare to publish something here, I think "I'm writing a post." When my gentle readers respond to what I've written, I think "they're making comments." Yet the official Dreamwidth vocabulary is not so straightforward. These are the things that keep me up at night!
To publish the current item, I tapped the "Post" link on the navigation bar. The next screen is called "Create Entries," yet the final action button is called "Post a $securitylevel Entry." With each entry I control who responds with "Comment" settings, yet the relevant FAQ talks about "replies."
One of Dreamwidth's quirkier features is how you can customize much of the user interaction texts
https://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options?group=text
My favorite example is
sovay, who titles the Comment/Reply function "Performable Epic."
( So, the poll )
I wrote these questions!
Do you like to reply to every comment in your journal?
I definitely try to, since the primary purpose of my journal is participating in the world. I like s-l-o-w conversations, which is why DW is the platform for me.
What type of post gets the most/least responses in your journal?
Polls! If you want traffic, post a poll (but then you need a paid account to do it). Second are “droll knows much” questions, especially when well phrased.
Media reviews get the least responses.
What do you do when a new person first comments in your journal?
I jump to their profile, see what we have in common. When there’s an overlap, I’ll mention it in my reply and follow them. When there isn’t an overlap, I’ll thank them for commenting.
When you’re reading someone else’s journal, do you read every comment before adding your own?
When there are fewer than 25 comments, yes. If there are more, I’ll skim the top level ones before putting in my two cents.
When is “too late” to reply to an entry?
NEVER! I back-read new folks all the time–I’ve piped up on six year old posts.
s-l-o-w conversations for the win
You can play at your own journal or at theThey’re sorta mysterious! I don’t get why people like them, so I’m crowd-sourcing.
