Description of the Righteous (also has an article on the topic)
The Blessings of the Day of Ashura - this was great. Imam Zaid Shakir talks about the history of Ashura. the Quraysh used to fast for Ashura because they had committed a great sin and asked how to repent. Allah (t) told them to fast on the day of Ashura. When Muhammad (saws) went to Yathrib/Medina he noticed that the Jews fasted for Ashura as well. they said that this was because Ashura was the day God drowned Pharoah in the sea. in order to differentiate the Muslims from the Jews (and the Christians, i believe) Muhammad said that Muslims should also fast the day before or after Ashura. Imam Shakir then goes on to discuss the battle of Karbala http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_K arbala and how all Muslims need to love the family of the Prophet... he mentions ahadith from Sunni sources.
