You are sixteen going on seventeen~♪ Baby, It’s time to think~♪ Better beware Be canny and careful
Baby, you’re on the brink~♪」

How's Everyone Spending Their Summer Vacation? Of Course, I'm Having a Movie Marathon.
My Ground Rules for Watching Movies

I touched on this lightly in my first piece about movies on note, [Substance] is Eggs, Chickens, and The Shining 🍳, but... these are my ground rules for watching movies and writing about them on note:
Choosing a film: I try my best not to input any prior information and decide whether or not to watch a film based solely on the poster or thumbnail image.
When writing:
When writing spoiler-free reviews, I keep it under 140 characters.
Even when writing reviews with spoilers, I don't write detailed plot summaries.
Before talking about the movie, I write about my life, which will later connect to the film, as a form of self-introduction.
Before Talking About the Movie, a Bit About Me
School Summer Vacation Assignment

When I wrote about [Superman], I briefly touched on Superman's real-world job as a newspaper reporter. After watching [KOKUHOU], I was able to go on a stage tour of Kyoto's Minamiza Theater and visit the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Art Museum at just the right time... Reminiscing about the newspaper-making assignment I did during summer vacation in school, I thought about Superman's Clark Kent and his girlfriend, the newspaper reporter... On the Shinkansen (bullet train) ride home, I playfully laid out my impressions on paper, like a newspaper page.

After watching the movie [National Treasure], I wanted to see a Kabuki performance by Tamasaburo Bando... That's when I happened to find the stage tour of Kyoto's Minamiza Theater.

When I watched the movie [National Treasure], I wrote in my review, "Only a limited number of actors, Maiko, and Geiko can stand on this stage, and even fewer can stand or walk on the Hanamichi (runway)." However, when I stood on that stage, which I had been watching from the audience since I was a child, for just 2,000 yen... I was teary-eyed and had goosebumps all over.

Furthermore, the other day was the anniversary of my grandmother's death, who was born and raised in Kyoto. That morning, I was talking to my mother on a video call and we both said, "Oh yeah, is it today?!" We had both forgotten... or rather, we were both so busy that we were like, "Is it already that date??"
In that situation, since I live in Kyoto, I decided to visit her grave, which I haven't been doing as much lately. It was a scorching hot day in Kyoto. Near the grave is the Kagiya Takadaiji branch. It was a tradition to eat Kuzukiri (arrowroot noodles) there before or after visiting the grave. I often visited with my grandmother and mother, enjoying the sound of ice clinking in our glasses while we ate Kuzukiri.

It was my first time visiting since the renovation, and it was a wonderful space. After cooling down and filling my stomach, I was walking to my next destination when... it started pouring rain. Even though I had a folding umbrella, I was worried about catching a cold if the hem of my dress got soaked... It was a real downpour. I racked my brain for a place to take shelter. "Ah! There should be a big roof at the entrance of the Kaburenjo!" I ran a little with my umbrella. Then I saw a bunch of tourists taking shelter there.

I squeezed into the space... and took a breath of relief. Then I thought, "Oh? There's a Gion Art Museum in the back, isn't there?"... "But the admission fee was supposed to be high, but since I came all the way here, let's go." Looking back now, it was a gift from my grandmother on the anniversary of her death.

On the way home from the day I stood on the Hanamichi of the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, I was genuinely terrified, thinking, "I'm so out of my depth, I'm going to die today..."
The World of Books and Stories

When I was little, I loved having my mother read picture books to me in bed. In the thin picture books of "Kodomo no Tomo" (Children's Friend), I especially loved the octopus children in "Aka desu yo Ao desu yo" (It's Red, It's Blue).

At the library, I remember borrowing "Karasu no Pan-ya-san" (The Crow's Bread Shop) and "Doronko Harry" (Harry the Dirty Dog) over and over again. At my local library, you could borrow up to 10 books per person, and I think my mother would borrow around 20 books in total, using both her card and mine.

Back then, I never thought I would end up working with books... I was boldly declaring, "I'm going to be a cake shop owner!" I completely forgot about this dream, but I fulfilled it as a part-time job in college. Christmas and Valentine's Day events were the best. I'll talk about that story sometime...

Furthermore, since I don't have children, I'm not sure if they still exist, but... when I was a child, there were picture books sold with cassette tapes that would read the story aloud. Among them, my favorite was "Kuma no Corduroy-kun" (Corduroy).

And rather than picture books, what comes to mind is... the video footage of Eric Carle, the author of "Harapeko Aomushi" (The Very Hungry Caterpillar). The narration is a little scary, but I used to watch it over and over again on VHS. I think it included "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me," "The Very Quiet Cricket," and "The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

"So far, these are all visual-focused memories, but... as I got a little older, around the ages of 4 and 5 in kindergarten, I enjoyed having long stories read to me over several days before bed. Those were "Peter Pan" and "Alice in Wonderland." At this point, I don't even know if I saw the Disney versions first... or if the books came first... it's all a blur.

At home, I would pretend that cushions were castella cakes and play "Guri and Gura" (Pancakes for Guri and Gura). Every time I saw milk, I would think, "When is my first errand?" And like "Konto Aki" and [Toy Story], I would expand my imagination in a room in a Kanto apartment, wondering if my stuffed animals would move.

Musicals
My mother took me out of that apartment and made my theater debut early. My first movie theater experience was [The Adventures of Elmer], which I saw with my father and mother... but I fell asleep halfway through, and I was sad, thinking, "Why did I fall asleep? Why didn't they wake me up?"
I don't know the exact timeline, but around that time, I was also taken to musicals. It was [Ganba no Boken] (Gambare no Bouken / The Adventures of Gamba). It was a story about mice, with some villains, and I was quite easily scared, so it was quite frightening... but I watched it intently without falling asleep, and I still remember the fluffiness of the theater seats vividly.

Another musical that left a lasting impression on me was [Peter Pan]. It was the famous Horipro musical with Ikue Sakakibara and Mitsuki Takahata, who I'm secretly a big fan of, playing Peter Pan. I remember the journey to and from the musical Peter Pan and the lobby of the theater vividly. But what I remember even more vividly is... Peter Pan actually flying in the air. I probably watched with my eyes wide open like in a manga, and even now, decades later, that feeling is burned into my heart.

"I Don't Get Musicals!" - But I've Been Surrounded by Them Since I Was a Kid...Apparently, some people dislike musicals, saying, "I don't understand why they suddenly burst into song!" But I've been familiar with musicals since I was little, in this kind of way... I did rhythmic gymnastics from a young age, so dance and music were always close to me. I loved overseas dramas and movies, especially musicals.

By the way, the remake of the movie is also recommended!
Furthermore, in junior high and high school, we had a teacher who showed us musical movies over two weeks. It was "The Sound of Music" and "West Side Story." After watching them, we all sang, "You are sixteen going on seventeen~♪ Baby, It’s time to think~♪ Better beware Be canny and careful Baby, you’re on the brink~♪" as we walked from the music room back to the classroom.

The music of "America" in the remake of "West Side Story"
was overwhelming, and I couldn't help but tap my feet quietly in the theater.
By the way, since it was an all-girls school, we all sang regardless of the male or female parts. When another class came back singing during break time, we'd all say, "Oh, Class X has seen it!" It became a topic of conversation.
Incidentally, six months later, "Tonight~ tonight, It all began tonight~♪" echoed in the hallway. But the movement of the class that watched it in the second week was very quiet. (If you've seen "West Side Story," you know why...)
A Musical I Saw in London
I've mentioned the story of going to Paris and London with my mother when I was in high school in "Fantastic Four" and "The Silence of the Lambs" a little bit...

Among them, Kew Gardens in a slightly rural area of London, England, is unforgettable. The scale is just huge. Some families were having picnics on the lawn, while others were lying down reading books. There were large trees everywhere, and everyone was spending their time in their own way underneath them.

There were squirrels on the lawn and trees, and I was probably the only one surprised and taking pictures. Everyone else was living with them as if they were Japanese pigeons.

What's even more unforgettable is the musical stage performances of "The Sound of Music" and "Billy Elliot" that I saw in London. Even now, my English ability is still almost non-existent. Watching a British English musical without subtitles was nothing short of "reckless." But the stage sets, songs, and acting alone were more than enough... It was a theatrical experience I will never forget.
Of course, I think I was able to enjoy it even with my non-existent English ability because I knew the story from the movies I had seen beforehand. I am so grateful to my mother for choosing to watch these works.

By the way, both works are recommended movies for summer vacation. Both seem to be available for streaming, so please check them out this summer.

First of all... I watched this movie on a rental DVD a little while after it was released. I think I was probably in junior high school. I've loved it ever since, and I've watched it one more time since then. And a few years later, it was performed as a Broadway musical, and I went to see the Japanese performance. So, I had been familiar with the story several times. When I returned home this time, my mother suddenly played it on a subscription service, saying, "I wonder how it will look if I watch it now..."

I watched many movies and dramas this summer vacation, but when I watched this work, I thought, "I really want to write about this movie..." Furthermore, while remembering "what it was like when I watched this movie" several times, I wanted to know what kind of person James Matthew Barrie was, so... I haven't researched the movie itself, but I'm writing this article after lightly researching the person.
So, it deviates a little from my usual rules of "watching without preconceptions" and "writing without researching," but... I want to proceed with writing because I strongly felt that I "want to write" about this work as a work I saw this summer.
Spoiler-Free Thoughts
This film tells the origin story of Peter Pan, a tale everyone knows.
You'll be captivated by the moments that make you think, "So, that's where the inspiration came from!" Keep an eye out for Johnny Depp in a role beyond pirates. Enjoy the beautiful stage design and the pure joy of the child actors. It's a movie that both kids and adults can enjoy safely, and it allows adults to rediscover their inner child. Thoughts with Spoilers
Peter Was Real...
What I had thought about Peter Pan since I was little was that he was a character in a story. In other words, I recognized him as a non-existent person. When I first watched this movie, I was surprised that Peter Pan had a model, and that there was even a boy named Peter who was really the same.

What surprised me even more was that I thought Peter Pan was a story of unknown authorship, like The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, but when I learned that it was the story of the person who wrote Peter Pan... I was even more drawn into this movie as a junior high school student.

What surprised me even more was that not only this Peter, but also the circumstances of his brothers and "my childhood circumstances" were a little similar.
Barrie's Background as the Writer of Peter Pan
What was shocking when I was researching Barrie while writing this article was that he had contact with the late Queen Elizabeth and her sister Margaret, which I also touched on in the Fantastic Four article. Barrie was reading to these two during their childhood.

Maybe, like Peter, these two might have become models for Barrie's story.
Furthermore, although I wrote about it as a joke in "My Story," Barrie was a newspaper reporter before he actually wrote articles as a playwright. I was a little surprised that he had trained to write facts as they were before he started writing stories. Or maybe he was training in creation if he was writing while imagining, "The facts are like this, but maybe they are like this..."

Brothers Who Are the Opposite of Peter Pan, Who Doesn't Grow Up
Brothers of various ages are depicted, but these brothers lost their father to cancer. It was right after that that they met James Barrie, who was writing, in Kensington Gardens.

They played in the park in their own way and stimulated Barrie's imagination, but Peter was the one who built a relationship by denying that imagination. Peter became rapidly adult after his father's death and became difficult. In such a situation, I think he couldn't allow his older brother to play make-believe or Barrie to talk about his imagination.

It was Barrie who suggested that Peter "write" and gradually released his heart, saying, "It's okay to be yourself as you are." Seeing such Peter, he gets the idea for the story of Peter Pan, who doesn't grow up. However, Barrie himself is depicted in the movie as the person who can't become an adult the most.
Barrie Doesn't Want to Become an Adult, Not That He Can't
Although he wrote Peter Pan with Peter as a model, Barrie himself, the author, looked like Peter Pan himself, who "doesn't want to become an adult."

For Barrie, it is impossible to deny that he can't do it. When the youngest brother says, "There's no way you can fly a kite," while the surrounding brothers say, "You can't," Barrie never denies it and believes, "You definitely can."

Tinkerbell was the one who reflected such thoughts in his creation. "When a baby laughs for the first time, a fairy is born with the laughter." Such a fairy, Tinkerbell, falls into a dying state, but says, "If the children believe, she will regain her strength," and... appeals to the audience, "If you believe, clap your hands."

The audience clapped their hands with all their might in response to that question. At this time, the grandmother, who made Peter and the others follow the rules, seemed to be the most adult, but... that grandmother was clapping her hands louder than the children. That figure was nothing short of "Barrie's magic."

Barrie probably knew that if he became an adult, he wouldn't be able to write stories that "cast magic on adults."

The grandmother's applause was mirrored by me.
A few years after this "Finding Neverland" was made into a movie, it became a musical on Broadway.
The main cast was...Matthew Morrison as J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland

That Finding Neverland was going to have a Japanese performance with the Broadway cast... I absolutely wanted to go. In September 2017, as a birthday present... my mother, who used to read Peter Pan to me when I was little and took me to musicals, showed me Finding Neverland.

Unfortunately, the cast that came to Japan was not Matthew Morrison... But I found out that he would be coming to Japan for a live performance the following year, and I went to see it with my mother.
It was such a good work that it didn't matter at all who the cast was, as I had been familiar with musicals since I was little... I liked the musical more... And it was by chance, but I participated in the stage door for the first time and many of the cast members gave fan service by taking two-shot photos. I still treasure the photo data from that time.
In this work, not only the cast but also the audience is prompted to applaud in the same scene. I was already convinced that the fairy with only the light effect was about to die... I clapped my hands with all my might while crying my eyes out.
Even after I don't know how many years have passed since Barrie wrote the story... it was the moment he cast a spell on me.
Jumping on the Bed
Apparently, after Peter Pan was actually published, children all over England jumped and jumped off their beds, and "children were injured trying to see if they could actually fly." In response to that story, Barrie added the setting that "you can't fly unless you sprinkle fairy dust."

Barrie actually got the idea for the story by watching Peter and his brothers jumping on the bed before going to sleep.I understand very well the feeling of wanting to imitate it with excitement, just like I leaned forward with excitement when I watched the musical Peter Pan when I was little.
I don't remember ever jumping on the bed because I had been sleeping on a futon since I was little... but I have "memories of jumping" for only two days. It was in the fall when I had just turned 9. It was right after my father died. It was at the funeral and memorial service venue in Kanto and at my father's enshrinement in Kyoto.

The funeral and memorial service venue had a space where family and relatives could stay and rest. There were many cushions used for Buddhist services piled up in that place. I was constantly flying from one end of the purple cushions to the other in my mourning dress. I can still vividly remember the feel of the cushions.

After the funeral, a meal was served, and I walked around with my mother, who gave speeches of thanks to the people who came, and greeted them individually. There, I was told, "Your father has become a star," and I was confused, "Huh? He died in front of my eyes, and his body is right next door, so why? A star?" But I couldn't say anything back and just stared at the person who said it. Then they started crying, "Leaving such a small child behind..."

Many more words were thrown at me, but the one that stuck in my heart the most was, "You have to support your mother." And with those words that pierced like a knife in my heart, I watched the smiles of the rhythmic gymnastics children who were eating sushi deliciously.
If I borrow the words that Barrie threw at Peter's older brother, I think I "became an adult" in that moment.

Furthermore, since the enshrinement was held in Kyoto, my mother and I, as well as relatives living far away, stayed at a hotel. The hotel bed was unusual, but... I was constantly flying on that bed.

Now that I think about it, I was probably flying on that luxurious hotel bed while wishing to "return to being a child"...
Bench in Kensington Gardens
Barrie lost his brother when he was little. In order to please his mother, who was grieving over his brother's death, he wore his brother's clothes and behaved like his brother. At that time, Barrie already had the most childlike heart, but it was probably the moment he became an adult in an instant. At the same time, he may have gained a success experience that he could cast magic in the play.

Such Barrie works hard to ensure that Peter "doesn't lose his childlike heart" after his father's death. Furthermore, it was Peter's mother who worked in the same way.
Initially, Barrie and Peter met on a bench in Kensington Gardens. When they met, Barrie was in the middle of writing, but it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that he was in a slump because the play he had created was severely criticized in the newspaper. It was Peter's family that healed him.

On the other hand, it was Barrie who encouraged Peter, who was trying to "become an adult" by hiding the fact that he was grieving over his father's death, to write, gave him challenges, and walked with him. The two were connected by writing.
It's been almost 3 months since I started writing about movies and "my story" on note. "Writing" is definitely connected to my healing. Furthermore, not only that, but I am also getting awareness and healing from the articles of people who are writing about common things. So, I don't think I can quit for a while.

A little time has passed since the day Barrie and Peter first met, and Barrie's mother, who supported him like Barrie, also passes away. It was Barrie who embraced that sadness with the written article on a bench in Kensington Gardens.
However, I didn't understand the intention of this last visual effect. Then, while researching Barrie, I learned about Peter's life. I was shocked when I found out, but this ending became something that I could easily accept. I couldn't accept the fact that my father had become a star at the time, but... I can only hope that the two of them are living happily in Neverland.

Bonus
Lecter's Cooking
I wrote about the story of watching the Hannibal Lecter series in a frenzy after watching The Silence of the Lambs in the previous article... but in that, the cooking scenes of Hannibal Lecter played by Mads Mikkelsen are fascinating.

When I was asked in advance, "What do you want to eat?" before returning home, I couldn't help but answer, "Pate!" I had bought and eaten pate when I went to Paris before, but... I couldn't forget the pate I had eaten at the house of an acquaintance couple who always served me delicious food... I couldn't help but be inspired by watching Lecter's cooking and... requested it. I think I'm crazy to watch that cooking scene and make a request...

When I got home, I watched a YouTube video of "How to Make a French Chef's Pate" and was told, "Try doing this," which was the task of filling the ingredients. We were both flustered about something we were making for the first time, but as a result, we made a very delicious pate. Thank you, Lecter... lol

By the way, in the previous article, I wrote about how I was recommended "Magnolia" by someone I met on note and it was very good... Furthermore, after reading my article, they commented and recommended "Seven" as well. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet during the summer vacation when I watched quite a few movies... but it's a work that I'm determined to watch during the remaining summer vacation.
By the way... I was able to watch "Hannibal Rising," which I was determined to watch even if I had to rent a DVD, because it was fortunately available at the rental DVD shop near my home. It was a work that allowed me to learn about Lecter's childhood.

There were many scenes of Cool Japan from an overseas perspective, and I was initially taken aback, but as a result, it was a work that I enjoyed because there were many parts that made me think, "Oh, that's how it is."
Glass Heart
"Glass Heart" is a work that I watched 10 episodes of in one day during the summer vacation. I didn't feel like watching it at all, but my mother started playing it while saying, "Takerun took the lead in production," and I got hooked.

The development, the way of speaking, and the lines are all manga-like, so it's a work that will definitely choose who gets hooked and who doesn't... But people who liked "Boys Over Flowers" or "NANA" may want to watch it...

By the way, before watching "Fantastic Four," which I wrote about in the article two before, even though I'm not a comic book fan, I didn't know that Fantastic Four was abbreviated as F4 in a news article or something... I thought it was "F4," an abbreviation for "Flower Four," the four members of "Boys Over Flowers," and I continued reading the article and couldn't understand the story at all, and I realized it in the train by myself and was embarrassed. lol

I was able to enjoy it even though I'm not familiar with music, so I don't know if people who are familiar with it can enjoy it from the bottom of their hearts... but it seems to be a work that is becoming a hot topic, so if you're having trouble finding something to watch, please check it out...
Nakano Broadway, a Place I Never Thought I'd Go
Furthermore, during the summer vacation, I went to an American toy shop in Tokyo because I wanted Star Wars goods. Then my mother, who seemed uninterested, came along, saying, "It looks interesting, so I'll go." At the shop, we got excited, saying, "There's also this..." While resting at a cafe, she said, "Hey, aren't there any other shops?" lol

I was satisfied enough and asked, "You're energetic, what's wrong? You didn't seem interested at all," and she said, "I'm starting to have fun." lol My mother was originally a buyer who bought stationery overseas. As expected of a former buyer. After that, we went around another shop and I don't know how many shops in Nakano Broadway. There were shops with high-priced products that looked like museums... I couldn't afford to buy them, but it became an unexpected summer vacation tour that enriched my eyes and was educational.
We took a few stations and it was close, so we decided to go to Nakano, saying that there would be more there... Nakano Broadway, which I only knew from TV, was a place I thought, "Who would go there at the time..." I won't forget the experience of being excited and having the same expression as overseas tourists, saying, "There's such a world..."

Touching vintage figures may be a therapy close to returning to my childhood, just like writing, I think this was my summer vacation.
There are only a few days left in summer vacation... I want to spend it watching movies and dramas. It was an unexpectedly comfortable Obon holiday, but everyone, please take care of your health...
Continue to have a good summer vacation and a good movie experience...
The End
