Last week's bread appeared to be holding out but then developed mould spots - didn't seem worth making bread at that point in the week and there were still rolls left over.

Friday night supper: penne with Peppadew Roasted Red Peppers whizzed in the blender and heated while the penne were cooking.

Saturday breakfast rolls: adaptable soft roll recipe, light spelt flour, maple syrup, cranberries, turned out quite nicely.

Today's lunch: venison haunch steaks, beaten out a little and rubbed with cut garlic clove and crushed 5-pepper blend, coriander seeds and juniper berries (this was perhaps a bit coarse), panfried in olive and butter and deglazed with madeira, served with La Ratte potatoes roasted in goosefat, slowcooked tenderstem broccoli (this turned out rather better than sometimes) and a rather small salad of some leftover pomadoro tomatoes halved and sprinkled with a little salt, sugar and Amonia berry balsamic vinegar.

Last week's bread went mouldy, made a loaf of Matthews Cotswold Eight-Grain Flour, v good.

Friday night supper: ersatz Thai fried rice with pepperoni.

Saturday breakfast rolls: eclectic vanilla, more vanilla-y with the new vanilla extract, but still a bit of a texture issue for some reason.

Today's lunch: smoked haddock with butter beans (Belazu Judion Butter Beans), again this seemed rather bland, something to do with the haddock? possibly these days one actually needs to add salt at some stage, which used to be quite excessive; served with baked San Marzano tomatoes and spinach done according to Dharamjit Singh's recipe in Indian Cookery.

This week's bread: I actually set out to make a Standen loaf, and discovered when I was already into the process, warming the milk and water, stirring up the yeast, etc, that I did not in fact have any buckwheat flour. So what I made was a loaf of 4:1 strong brown/einkorn flour, with maple syrup and Rayner's barley malt extract, which actually turned out quite nice.

Friday night supper: ven pongal (South Indian Khichchari).

Saturday breakfast rolls: basic buttermilk: 3:1 strong white flour/buckwheat flour (in this week's grocery order): nice.

Today's lunch: asparagus steamed and tossed in lime butter, Dulce Deliciosa Vine tomatoes roasted in olive oil with thyme, golden butternut squash roasted in toasted pumpkin seed oil with paprika, and aubergine slices grilled and then splashed with tamari/mirin/lazy ginger (memory said this was nicer than this turned out, a bit dry?)

***

In accordance with tradition for my natal day, I pass round virtual rich dark gingerbread (and also gluten-free, diabetic-friendly, etc, versions), sanitive madeira (eschewing rather tired Duke of Clarence jokes) and other beverages of choice, and lift a glass to my dr rdrz.

Last week's bread held out extremely well -

With enough left over to make a frittata with some chopped up chorizo de navarra.

Saturday breakfast rolls: Tassajarra method, light spelt flour, Rayner's Barley Malt Extract, cinnamon and raisins, v nice.

Today's lunch: diced braising beef casseroled with soy sauce (possibly a little too much), garlic and star anise, served with tenderstem broccoli tips cooked thus, stirfried tat soi (this oozed a lot of moisture), and salt and pepper potato wedges left over from last night, rather more than we needed then.

Last week's bread developed mould: made a loaf of Country Oatmeal aka Monastery Loaf from Eric Treuille and Ursula Ferrigno's Bread (2:1:1 wholemeal/strong white/medium oatmeal) and perhaps because I actually did the slow rising and proving for once, it turned out very nice indeed.

Friday night supper: as I had the best part of a small jar of Roasted Red Pepper & Tomato Mezze Dip left over from last Sunday, I thought this would go rather well over pasta, and had it with penne. I was right.

Saturday breakfast rolls: brown grated apple, strong brown flour, maple syrup, a dash of ground ginger (a bit fugitive) - came out a bit dense, possibly because they did not get taken out of the fridge until just before baking time (rather than recovering at room temperature for an hour or so).

Today's lunch: seabass fillets rubbed with salt, ginger paste and lime juice and left for a couple of hours then panfried, served with La Ratte potatoes roasted in beef dripping, fine green beans roasted in pumpkin seed oil with fennel seeds and splashed with Aronia Berry (apparently this is aka Chokeberry?) Balsamic Vinegar, and padron peppers.

This week's bread: as I have obtained some einkorn flour, a loaf of that with a little strong white, possibly a little more of the latter would have been in order, but still quite good if a little crumbly.

Friday night supper: the last sweet potato, parboiled then fried up with chopped Milano salami.

Saturday breakfast rolls: brown toasted pinenut, light spelt flour, turned out quite well.

Today's lunch: savoury clafoutis, I had intended with asparagus but did not get this in our order so used frozen Mushroom Medley instead, with chopped garlic and oregano, with 'baby' (hulking teenage) carrots cut up and roasted in sunflower and sesame oil and then tossed in a little mirin and sugar, and sweetstem white and purple cauliflower roasted in toasted pumpkin seed oil with cumin seed.

This week's bread (last week's having developed mould, chiz chiz): a loaf of Matthews Cotswold Eight-Grain Flour, as ever v nice.

Saturday breakfast rolls: adaptable soft rolls recipe, 4:1 strong brown/buckwheat flour, maple syrup, dried blueberries, perhaps a little on the heavy side.

Today's lunch: beef short ribs casseroled in red wine with garlic, 5 pepper blend, bay leaf and thyme, served with Red Velvet sweet potatoes peeled and cut into chunks, parboiled for 10 minutes, then roasted in a mixture of avocado and roasted pumpkin seed oil in a hot oven for 30 minutes turning occasionally, and sugar snap peas stirfried with star anise.

This week's bread: a very simple loaf which I meant to be just Marriage's Light Spelt flour but there wasn't quite enough so it turned out about 5:1 that and Strong Brown, with a splash of Roasted Pumpkin Seed Oil, v nice.

Friday night supper: penne with a sauce of chopped chorizo and salami and the rest of the jar of sundried tomatoes in oil with garlic and oregano from the other week, whizzed in the blender, rather good.

No Saturday breakfast rolls as I had inadvertently ordered a double lot of croissants.

Today's lunch: panfried seabream fillets with samphire sauce, served with sticky rice with dried lime leaves, baby vine tomatoes roasted in olive oil with salt and basil, and sweet and sour okra + chopped Romano pepper and baby leeks (the okra was perhaps just a little bit past it).

With this we had, as per tradition, Bollinger La Grande Annee (2015), for our 42nd anniversary of living here together.

Last week's bread developed mould, so I made a loaf of Dove's Farm Organic Seedhouse Bread Flour, as always v nice.

During the week made some Famous Aubergine Dip to take to [personal profile] coughingbear and [personal profile] hano's party for Saturday (it is good to make a day or so in advance to allow the flavours to develop).

Saturday breakfast rolls: basic buttermilk, 3:1 strong brown/dark rye - I am finding this dark rye makes the result turn out rather heavy.

Made foccaccia for the party: did not turn out terribly well, ? something went wrong with proportions? or maybe atmospheric conditions?

Today's lunch: bozbash with aubergine (baby aubergines have been largely absent all summer), baby courgettes, Romano peppers, okra, dried cranberries, fresh basil and green coriander, and Belazu Gordo Especial Chickpeas (highly recommended).

This week's bread: the Collister/Blake My Favourite Loaf, strong white/wholemeal/dark rye flour. The rye flour possibly made it a bit heavy.

Friday night supper: groceries arrived early enough in the pm that I had time to make a sardegnera, strong brown flour, with smoky chorizo and salsiccon salami.

Saturday breakfast rolls: brown grated apple, actually Light Spelt Flour, and Rayners Barley Malt Extract. V good.

Today's lunch: lamb loin chops, which rather than try to grill with our rather basic grill, brushed with a little oil oil, seasoned with salt and pepper and rubbed with half a clove of garlic, browned on either side on the hob then put in a hot oven, worked rather well; served with a salsa of tinned chopped tomatoes whooshed in the blender with some sundried tomatoes in olive oil, 2 dried chipotle chillies lightly toasted and hydrated, and some freeze-dried coriander (a bit underpowered); buttered spinach, and miniature new potatoes cooked more or less following the Anna's Kitchen recipe, this time with basil, thyme and rosemary. For some reason came out a bit undercooked.

Last week's bread held out pretty well, and there was even sufficient left to make frittata for Friday night supper.

Saturday breakfast rolls: the ones loosely based on James Beard's mother's raisin bread, with Strong Brown Flour.

Today's lunch, hake fillets, cooked as for plaice in coriander butter, took Jane Grigson's advice to sprinkle the fillets with salt an hour or so before cooking, think it improved this rather dull fish, also the new lemon zester is a vast improvement, and I used fresh dill and tarragon, though possibly not quite enough butter; served with slowcooked Bellaverde sweetstem broccoli, healthy-grilled asparagus (did not have room on the hob to steam) and sticky rice.

Friday night supper: ven pongal (South Indian khichchari). a bit mushy perhaps.

Saturday breakfast rolls: Tassajarra method, 50/50% strong white/wholemeal flour, maple syrup.

Today's lunch: stuffed ancho chiles, in which I used Bold Bean Co. Queen Black Beans rather than trying to chase down dried black beans, and anyway, these are very good; served with chicory quartered, healthy-grilled in avocado oil and splashed with gooseberry vinegar.

This week's bread: Len Deighton's Mixed Wholemeal Loaf from The Sunday Times Book of Real Bread, 4:1:1 wholemeal flour/strong white flour/mix of medium oatmeal, coarse cornmeal, and I intended wheatgerm but it was rather past its best before and looked weird and clumpy, so I scooped it off and substituted bran, splash of sunflower oil; turned out nice but going a bit crumbly towards the end of the week.

Saturday breakfast rolls: basic buttermilk, Light Spelt flour, very nice.

Today's lunch: venison haunch steaks, beaten out a bit, rubbed with a cut garlic clove, and then with 5-pepper blend crushed with coriander seeds, juniper berries and salt, and left for a couple of hours, panfried in butter + olive oil, deglazed with madeira, this reduced for a jus; served with miniature new potatoes in their skins tossed in 2 teaspoons of olive oil, 1 bunch of tarragon snipped, and salt, and roasted for an hour in a hottish oven, turning after half an hour (based on a recipe in Anna's Kitchen) and green beans roasted in toasted pumpkin seed oil with cumin seeds and splashed with the dregs of elderflower vinegar*.

*Demijohn not only have this and gooseberry back in stock, they have been running a discount code this week, yay.

There was still a substantial amount of cornbread left, so no bread made.

Friday night supper: penne with bottled artichoke hearts in oil + chopped red bell pepper sauteed in some of the oil.

Saturday breakfast rolls: adaptable soft roll recipe, Marriage's Golden Wholegrain Bread Flour, maple syrup, raisins - turned out a little stodgy, I think using up the bag of flour because it was just past its best before may have made the proportions a bit off.

Today's lunch: kedgeree with smoked cod, served with padron peppers and baby pak choi stirfried with star anise.

Last week's bread mostly held out.

Friday night supper: ersatz Thai fried rice with pepperoni.

Saturday breakfast rolls: eclectic vanilla, possibly a little on the stodgy side, but possibly the latest type of vanilla extract makes them more vanilla-y?

Today's lunch: chestnut mushrooms in olive oil, steamed asparagus in melted butter, Dulce Joya Vine Tomatoes (red and yellow) roasted in olive oil with basil, and cornbread (a little heavy: I think the baking powder, nearly at its use-by date, was possibly affected by weather/atmospheric conditions).

Last week's loaf dried into a solid brick, so I made a loaf of Doves Farm Organic Heritage Seeded Bread Flour - I know I made this quite recently but I noted then that it was moving past its best before, and saw somewhere that this is more of an issue with seeded than non-seeded flours. Anyway, v nice.

Saturday breakfast rolls: as there is a plethora of apples, brown grated apple with maple syrup, and Strong Brown Flour.

Today's lunch: made something approximating chilli con carne with diced braising steak, Belazu Mixed Beans, a tin of chopped tomatoes, onion, garlic, two rather weary green chillies left over from the other week, chilli powder, hot and sweet smoked paprika, ground cumin, ground coriander, oregano, sugar, salt and pepper, and that turned out rather well (and potent); served with broccoli florets cooked thus and sweet and sour okra.

Last week's bread developed mould in the humidity, so I made the Country Oatmeal aka Monastery Loaf from Eric Treuille and Ursula Ferrigno's Bread (2:1:1 wholemeal/strong white/medium oatmeal), a bit dense but tasty.

Friday night we were OUT.

This also meant no making rolls, so we had toast for Saturday breakfast instead.

Today's lunch: lemon sole fillets spread with salt, chopped remains of fresh green coriander from last week, ginger paste and lemongrass paste, folded over, placed in a greased baking dish, drizzled with sesame oil, sprinkled with breadcrumbs and some rice wine splashed in, covered with foil and baked for 20 mins in a moderately hot oven, served with sticky rice with lime leaves and tat soi stirfried with garlic.

Friday night supper: penne with a sauce of Peppadew Roasted Red Peppers whizzed in the blender and briefly heated while the penne were cooking.

Saturday breakfast rolls: having acquired pinenuts, brown toasted pinenut, with strong brown flour; turned out quite well.

Today's lunch; butterbean curry, using Belazu Judion Butter Beans, and a recipe I must have got off the internet somewhere, which was a bit haphazardly organised (list the ingredients in the order they're going to be used, rather than randomly!), but turned out rather nice (admittedly I also substituted green chillies for chilli powder as I found mine was yay past its best before); cauliflower curry from Jack Santa Maria's Indian Vegetarian Cookery, steamed green beans with ginger and fennel from Dharamjit Singh's Indian Cookery, and basmati rice with whole spices very loosely after the recipe in Madhur Jaffrey's Introduction to Indian Cooking.

Saturday breakfast rolls: was intending brown toasted pinenut, but the pinenuts turned out to be well past their Best Before, so made brown with dried cranberries instead. Not bad.

Today's lunch: halibut fillets which I poached thus (perhaps a little overdone) with samphire sauce, served with mangetout peas and sliced yellow bell pepper roasted in lemon-infused olive oil, and boiled baby Jersey Royal potatoes.
