Mister Rosetta 2
9:59 am
23rd of May, 8:00pm The Rosetta Stone, Open
Mr. Rosetta strolled into the back room of his club through his private stair. He nodded to a waitress who was clocking in and strode through the doors into the main room. The music wasn't that loud yet and some mellow Harry Belafonte was echoing across the empty dance floor. He glanced at the few mortal patrons that had come in so far and greeted a couple of regulars. Stepping behind the bar he checked the staffing for tonight, it wouldn't do to have people calling in sick on the night of a full moon.

Though he hadn't had trouble on the past three, Rosetta always worried that one night the moon would bring a party of frenzied lycans into his club. That sort of mess was something he'd need all of his workers on hand to help with. Sure, a couple of kids fresh out of bartending school, some struggling actor/singer/artists, and two ex-con bouncers would never be a match for some moon mad werewolves...
but at least they stood a chance of getting the normal patrons safely out of the bar before anyone died.

Full staff clocked in.
Rosetta's grin widened into his usual smile. He could relax a little, the full rush wouldn't be coming in until later, when the stars struggled to shine through the smokey, light polluted sky. Rosetta strolled out into the club and spotted one of his regulars, a woman named Olivia who worked up the street. She was a hard working single mom who must've gotten a sitter for the night, lucky for Rosetta.

"Olivia, so nice to see you again... who iz watching you leetle Francesco tonight?" Olivia glanced up and smiled at Rosetta as he walked over. She had been standing on the edge of the dance floor, enjoying the music and barely noticed that as she talked with him, Rosetta slowly led her over to a more secluded corner of the club.

"Oh, I got Tina to watch him. He's such a good little boy that I didn't even have to ask twice."

"Such a sweet child, like his mother I'm sure. I will have to...come by and visit some time to meet him."

"Oh that might be nice, I'm worried that he doesn't have any father figures in his life. He only gets to see dad once or twice a year."

"Ah yes your father, how is he doing in Florida? Well I hope?"

"Yes, he's fine. Talked to him last Easter..." Olivia trailed off as Rosetta placed a hand on her shoulder. She looked into his impenetrable dark sunglasses and felt a haze coming over her mind. She must be fainting. It was so lucky Mr. Rosetta was there, he was nice enough to catch her as she fell into unconciousness.

Bygone Days - Mr. Rosetta 1
I created an LJ for a vampire character a couple years ago and LJ just let me know they're going to purge it. Made me realize that I should post over here.
In fact, I'm going to repost the two things that Mr. Rosetta had to say. It seems I was using him to apply to some sort of RP group that never replied or accepted me. Hm. I don't even remember it, that was eight friggin years ago.

Occupation: Night Club Owner in Spanish Harlem

*appearrance;
Mr. Rosetta is an average latino man who looks to be middle aged. Though he may have been in good physical condition once, it's clear that his body has seen better days. He has a slight paunch and his slicked, black hair and mustache shows a sprinkling of gray. As his name might imply he usually wears shades of red, whether it's a candy-apple zoot suit or a casual burgundy polo shirt, Rosetta is always fashionable. Two things that are never lacking no matter what the outfit are his dark sunglasses and his sparkling smile.

*personality;
Mr. Rosetta is friendly. He can come across as your well off uncle who spoils you when your mom isn't looking. He can pat you on the shoulder as he walks you out of his club, apologizing that he can't let you start fights there. He can also sound like the man who is about to reveal some very disturbing secret when he discusses perfectly legitiment business in his office over some Cuban cigars. Mr. Rosetta never seems to get angry and is always polite.

He is nearly slavish when speaking with his betters, gracious among peers, and generous among his lessers.
Always smiling to them all.

HISTORY--

Mr. Rosetta was raised in a latino immigrant family in Chicago at the end of the 19th century. His father moved them to America when he was very young and he has very few memories of his homeland. After growing up on the hard streets of Chicago, helping out with his father's tailor business like the rest of his family, he managed to get a good job driving trucks for the large shipping firms based aound the rail yards. His father had always taught him to keep his head down and not to upset people, America was a place for them to make a new start and new friends, not trouble.

Trouble found Rosetta's father however, when a new Mob boss moved into their part of town. The protection money had always been reasonable and his family had always paid it, out of a sense of respect and trust that this was how it was to be in Chicago. However Boss Giozetti had big plans, and those plans needed more money from the shopowners and land lords. Rosetta's father tried to pay the new prices, but it was just too much. After seeing his little neices going hungry he decided that he had to do something.

Mr. Rosetta had always been good at making friends, so when he started asking around out the Teamsters union it didn't take him long to find a sympathetic ear. One of the men from the North routes was in good with Giozetti's brother and agreed to set up a meeting. Giozetti was holding a meeting at a warehouse on the railyard that Friday and would be talking with local people about what he could offer them, and more importantly, what they'd do in return. Mr. Rosetta drove down to the meeting with his friend from the docks and a guy from out of town, name of Phil, who supposedly was from a different Local. They arrived at the warehouse and were allowed in by Giozetti's thugs. Rosetta never got a chance to speak with him, because a rival boss sent two cars full of gunmen smashing through the warehouse doors to mow down everyone there. Rosetta died not knowing that this killers had ensured that his father would not have to starve and his neices could grow up healthy.

Rosetta awoke cold, in the back of a moving truck later that night. Phil, the guy who was from out of town, had sired him and made Mr. Rosetta a vampire. For a few dozen years they travelled together and Phil taught Rosetta what it was to be a vampire and what their place was in the world of the supernatural. On top of that, Rosetta learned that because Phil had never known his sire, they were looked upon as a kind of mongrel among the more powerful vampires who put great stock in their bloodlines. Phil and Rosetta traveled about from city to city doing favors for the local undead and helping get the usually urban-bound vampires get around the country safely. Even after he and Phil parted ways in the '60s, Rosetta continued to learn. He heard tales of dark creatures from the netherworld, saw the handiwork of mortal wizards, and met first hand the bloodthirsty lycan who dwelled in the shrinking wilderness.

In 1998, Rosetta had a chance to follow in his father's footsteps. When rescuing a rich vampire's servitor from his broken down car, not to mention the lycans that happened to call that part of the Rocky Mountains their home, he earned a substantial reward from the unfortunate man's master. Though not enough to make Rosetta rich, it was a start. Rosetta quickly called in favors and visited old friends who had attained positions of power in their home cities. With a series of careful investments and arranged bets heis reward went to work.

Throughout his travels, Rosetta always loved the music of what he saw as "his people". Whether it was mambo, samba, tango, rumba, or his favorite, SALSA, Mr. Rosetta always had it on his car's radio (tape deck, stereo, Cd player, etc). With his newfound wealth he would honor the murky memories of his mortal family by making a place where he could share his love with others.

The Rosetta Stone.

Carefully meeting with the city bureaucrats and the city's Master, Rosetta set to work. Soon he had bought a building whose ground floor was a disco once upon a time. Here he made his home, office, and place of business. The Rosetta stone became a place where vampires could come to feel the joy of the music in their hearts, the pulse of the rythm in their veins, and the heat of the dancers in their flesh (and in their bellies, if they behaved themselves). He also allowed the bouncers (once he had awakened them to the world of the supernatural with a taste of his blood) to let other supernatural creatures in as well. As long as there wasn't too much trouble caused between them, they were treated by Mr. Rosetta as graciously as any other patron of the club. The only group that is universally banned from his club is the Avengers. It is place for people to relax and have a good time, not a place for zealots and martyrs to wage war.

Though Mr. Rosetta has only been in business a few months but he's making friends and the business in his part of Spanish Harlem. Just like his father he gives his due to those who he needs to and tries to stay out of trouble. Any day now though, trouble might just find him.

OTHER--
Mr. Rosetta is what a Vampire: the Masquerade palyer would call "Nomadic Caitiff". He can spout fangs and feed and lick wounds shut afterwards. He's hurt by most things, though he can usually regenerate arfterwards given the time and blood.

The only powers he seems to display are an uncanny way to defuse tense situations and get people to listen to him; his intuitive knack for picking out supernaturals and other bits of things about people he meets; and the way his teeth always seem to shine as if lit by their own set of halogen bulbs.

The main thing that people remember after meeting Mr. Rosetta is that they can't place his accent. While sounding Mexican or Puerto Rican at first, listeners pick up Rs that are rolled in a more slavic way or a word that is drawled with Parisian tones. When asked exactly where his family is from Mr. Rosetta simply replies "Chicago".

Example--
"Meester Vega! Meester Vega!" called out Mr. Rosetta from the wings of the stage. Vega's band had just finished their set for the night and were ready to party. Vega handed his guitar to the drummer and slouched his way over to the club's owner. "Meester Vega, you played wonderfully thees evening. I am so happy that I could open my doors to you all." Vega was happy too, it was their first show in the Big Apple and they had been lucky to get it. "I would love to have you back, maybee later thees month you all could return. My...cousin will be playing. With his funky-funky salsa band and I theenk that you too could play." Vega glanced over at his ska band's horn players and nodded. It'd be nice to have a full horn section for a change. He told the boys to wait as he went into Rosetta's office to make the arrangements.

When the band got back to New Jersey that night they celebrated their first show all night, but not Vega. He fell asleep before they got off the turnpike. When asked about it as he stumbled up to his apartment he shrugged and said "I dunno man, I just feel kinda...drained."

Fun dreams
So I had a dream that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy were a pair of Victorian criminals who had been freed from prison in order to take up a magical quest. They never sounded like the their characters or had the same costumes but they acted like them. I saw two episodes of this show, meaning I saw the opening twice. The warden (who looked like Donald Sutherland) who let them out had been ordered to give them a device when he let them out, unknown to him the device opened and gave them a golden key (he thought the device was just a tool, not really valuable, or else he would have kept it). The key is really the main point of the story.

The first episode seems to fade in and out of a full Victorian London or Paris set, with dampness and darkness and fog)and the interiors of the English Village at the Enchanted Forest theme park.

I'm some street urchin thief kid who gets caught up with them and ends up being sort of a valet. Carrying parcels and opening doors. The whole time the two ladies are in these gigantic skirts that remind me of the Moulin Rouge. Speaking of which, at the end of the first episode they find a friend at a traveling circus and leave town with him. Only to find out that the wagon they've boarded is actually part of this huge inflatable contraption that then flies up and away from the city. They circus' airship is in fact shaped like a gigantic brain, and it is odd that there is no hanging gondola and no visible propellers.

The next episode opens with me creeping out a window and finding myself on a lobe of the brain utterly confused. I had thought that we'd landed on a rooftop. It turns out that the room everyone had collapsed in after a night of drinking was near the top of the brain balloon. While on the lobe I spot a fair just setting up and the leader of the circus decides to touch down and set up in an open spot and take advantage of the crowds that will be coming later. The ladies decide that this would be a good place to get information on their quest and I am basically left to my own devices.

I find that many of the booths next to us have rows of chairs facing a curtain and lectern on one side. Each of them with slightly different wooden folding chairs and different colored curtains. It seems that this is a Sunday and these booths are for church goers to come and here the different preachers. They can feel less guilty about coming to the fair and sometimes the church can win some people over from their neighbors. In this section there is one 30x20 booth with no chairs, instead it has wooden blocks on posts and hung wooden dummies.

I investigate to find that it is a pistol range smack in the middle of the church booths. Some of the other booth people are there grousing and I step forward to confront the cavalrymen looking men about it and they argue that safety is not their concern. We should not complain because the 2ftx2ft wooden blocks at head height will stop the bullets from their guns and the people visiting the booth will all be told to aim for the dummy's head. I argue that their patrons will not all have such good aim while he demonstrates his statement. I have to shout over his gunfire but to his credit all three of his shots sink into the wooden block and do not pass through.

To disprove my claims he grabs one of the circus folk (modeled after a dimwitted coworker of mine) and reveals him to be his son. None of us question the officer, who looks like Malcolm McDowel at this point, when he claims the other to be his son. Though the circus worker is actually a Pakistani guy with really dark skin. The officer sets up a dummy and slaps a pistols into our man's hand with a comment like "do me proud boy." or "show me that you aren't a complete embarrassment to the family." I whisper some words of encouragement to him that if he helps us we'll all treat him like a real part of the circus family and stop the teasing and cold shouldering he got during the partying last night.

I awake before his shot is fired.

RAAAAAIIIIIIINNNNNNSSSS!!!!
So during the rains of the past couple weeks, we've gotten a small leak in our wall.

http://tomthefanboy.com/photos/juneleak01.JPG

I noticed a long time ago but it was always dry when I reached up and touched the discolored section. I thought it was an imperfection in the wall from the closet on the other side. The interior of the closet lines up almost perfectly.

http://tomthefanboy.com/photos/juneleak02.JPG

Little did I know that both were correct. the imperfection in the closet construction is what CAUSED the water to drain to that specific point and cause the leak.

Luckily that spot actually had no electronics beneath it. I was able to pull the desk out and put a bucket up against the wall there. I added a slope made of duct tape in the hopes I'd catch any other drips that started new paths.

At least something good came out of it, now we've got a picture of me taking a leak!

Day Dream - Night Dream
Daydreaming while multitasking between FF13 and some file clean up on the computer. Imagine the Clock King from Batman as an encounter. I hear mechalith's voice (actually, it's someone else's voice that is assigned to him in the daydream) say "I admire him for his snazzy dress, his polished ratspin." In the context of the daydream the ratspin referred to his cane. I really think that'd be a neat sort of Dickensian nickname for someone's cane. I think that is what the Beedle had in Burton's Sweeney Todd.

I kinda start worrying about myself when I get dozy in the middle of the day. I start drifting in and out of daydreams like some ADD narcoleptic, with all of the stuff I'm doing bleeding over into a synesthetic dreamworld where the button presses I'm repeating to grind monsters on the xbox are assigned little abstract shapes dancing about in a pattern that doesn't really match up with what would be happening on the screen if I opened my eyes.

Maybe I'll talk to a doctor about that and how my unbridled laughter has pushed me to the edge of passing out more than ever before in the past couple months.
After I get the Fungal/Bacterial Tag Team Infection cleared up. If you like gross things I have pictures!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Morning of May 22nd Dream

The dream started with something like a movie trailer, a premonition of things to come. It has hissing monsters, people falling through old boards, a trap with a block and a wire, and a storm blowing windows in. I don't recall there being a name mentioned in the trailer but it was definitely a movie trailer, it had a green "movie rating" panel at the very beginning.

( Cut for size, I try and literally write down every detail when I have a dream like this.Collapse )

Finished American Gods
After all is said and done I'm glad I waited until 1b1t to read it.

If I'd read the book years ago then I would have gamed differently. Pluto Washburn, the mad zealot of Odin, the Vigilante of the Vale, the Midnight Archer, would have been a much different character. I loved that character an I'm glad of what he became. If I'd read this book I probably wouldn't have treated the old man on the rooftop who turned into ravens the same way.

I can't believe it took me until Chapter 4 for Wednesday to CLICK.

Me, who's had D&D characters in shadow's position and picked up the subtext right away. Me who's dealt with modern and ancient gods in dozens of games and stories before. ME, who puzzled out the mysteries of the days of the week in middle school because I was curious!

The really amazing thing is that from the moment I started reading Chapter 4 my brain was doing a countdown of the days of the week.

Friday - Frig's day, woman's day, as the text clearly spells out.

Saturday - Renamed to celebrate Saturn, blame the Romans

Sunday - Day of the sun

Monday - Day of the Moon, slightly less literal

Tuesday - TYR'S DAY God of justice, sometimes called Tiw or Ziw.

Wednesday - WODEN'S DAY, Glory to the Alltfather.
which of course leaves us Thursday - THOR'S DAY, which brings us back around to the wonderful pun combining the lateness of the earlier flight's take off time as well as the oncoming storm.

The line of thinking orbited my brain like a botched yo-yo trick, the realization swinging into plain view before the punch line of "More like a Thursday" smashed right between the eyes, leaving my pride deeply bruised.

I take solace in the fact that I have been in the habit of checking my inquisitiveness lately in order to let storytellers reveal their tales in their own time. I have had far too many friends think through every subtext and jump to conclusions and ruin surprises for others. I believe I'll leave my Genre Savvy control "ON" for the rest of the book.

Alien Link Spam
OK, so I've been watching Aliens tonight. I think the new Alice in the OMGOM is NEWT!

http://cache.io9.com/assets/resources/2008/05/Aliens-newt.jpg

This time around I'm noticing just how many things from that movie have been used in movies, TV, and other stuff.. I'm not even going to start pulling out Starcraft or 40K comparisons, those are obvious and usually on purpose.

Right when the aliens first attack, the third soldier to die is listed as "Crowe, T." I think that's where Joel got the name Crow T Robot.

"Let's Rock!" is from Vasquez in Aliens, it was reused at the beginning of this AMV.

Also, since we're on the topic, I recently made some Alien themed art.
One of my gaming buddies was using a totoro plushy as a face hugger.

Anybody know if there's a way to pipe an rss feed into your livejournal?
I'm trying to get the stuff I share from google reader to post over here.

It's all part of my plot to unify all of the stuff I share with people online and to keep from having to make posts like this. Of course I dunno what'll happen to this journal once I turn tomthefanboy .com into a proper blog with wordpress.

Wait a minute....
Also, I'd like to complain about having to be up this early. My toe is infected, so I've been taking antibiotics. This special kind is nicely potent and hasn't caused me indigestion, but it is a diarrhetic. Meaning I have to drink lots of water because it makes me pee more often. No I'm not one of those macho weirdos that brags about his ability to "hold it" but I usually can get a good night's sleep before I am awakened by that particular requirement. Now I can't even get my usual 6 hours of sleep! Let alone sleep in afterward.

Today in particular I may have been able to get back to sleep if I hadn't had to write down hazy details of a dream.

So I was up until a little past 1am last night talking to mousewrites, the Storyteller for the Mysterious Game of Mystery. This game ran its first story around this time last year and a few weeks ago we've started the second story. To make character creation easier the first time around, we decided to make Player Incarnates. PIs are sort of the self inserts of RPGs, but the systems keep you from being too sueish and in some cases will force you to improve your self esteem. This was an idea that I was the first to suggest and let me tell you its made all the difference. The game has gone very meta, to the point that we have youtube videos commenting on our progress and we got emails from ourselves.

Anyway I was up with her discussing the meta stuff I've been investigating online. I dug far enough to find her secrets and she politely asked me to not read them so I obliged. I spent about 4 hours last night searching for clues so it's not too surprising I found the wrong out of game trail to follow behind the GM screen.

ANYWAY AGAIN, let me just put an LJ cut here so I can go on about ( the dreams I just had.Collapse )

Long time coming.....
So I've got this ever growing backlog of stuff I've been meaning to link you all to.

And.... well.... It's huge. I'm so busy with the new Final Fantasy game and the RPGs that I'm in and organizing stuff for Pocky Club that I haven't bothered posting. So what I'm going to do is just slap big chunks of the backlog up behind cuts and let you scan the urls for stuff that might interest you. I'll hotlink pics when allowed.

If you're interested, you can follow "tomthefanboy" on Google Buzz to see all the stuff that I just share instead of posting here. Sharing with a note is so much easier than logging in here and posting a url with my commentary.

You Ain't Seen Meta Yet
by Tom the Fanboy
Based on Bachman Turner Overdrive's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"

I met an in-game woman
Charisma rolled my heart away
GM said, I've had it comin' to me
But I shrugged and said OK
I say that in-game love is good lovin'
So I took what I could get mmh, mmh, mmh
GM looked at me with them brown eyes

And said, You ain't seen meta yet
P-P-P-Player, you just ain't seen m-m-m-meta yet
Here's some emails that you're never gonna forget
P-P-P-Player, you just ain't seen m-m-m-meta yet
And you're wife thinks you're foolin' around, that's right

And now I'm feelin' better
Cause I blocked them out for sure
Then I visited my doctor
Cause this itch I couldn't cure
He said that I'd caught something exotic
Something only elves could get
Made up disease I couldn't get
And then the GM was waiting right outside

And said, You ain't seen meta yet
P-P-P-Player, you just ain't seen m-m-m-meta yet
That's something, that a doctor will say you can't get, player
P-P-P-Player, you know, you know, you know, you just ain't seen meta yet
You need a moon cream, find a wizard school

Any gamin' is good gamin'
So I played with who I met
Yes I played with who I met
And then, and then, and then the GM kept taking off their disguise,

And said, you ain't seen meta yet
Baby, you just ain't seen m-m-meta yet
Here's something, Here's something
Here's someone from game I've think you've met, player
P-P-Player, you just ain't seen m-m-meta yet
She's an elf from that town,
You ain't seen meta yet, then the new girl told me
She said, "We have kids now, they're in school."

I know I ain't seen meta yet
I know I ain't seen meta yet, mmh, mmh, mmh
I got some spells for you right now
Feels good, alright, how do I roll that
But I ain't seen meta yet
But I deserve it for disrupting game
Woohoo, but I ain't seen meta yet
I ain't seen nothin' yet
Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah
I ain't seen nothin' yet
I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait
Next time just tell me what my character sees, where HE ain't been
Lalalalalala
