Marafon-D

Marafon [Roskosmos]

The Russian Marafon-D is a prototype for the Marafon low earth orbit constellation for or internet of things (IoT) communications, which is part of the Sfera program.

Sfera is a planned Russian constellation consisting of at least 162 satellites, which would include communication satellites Ekspress and Ekspress-RV in geostationary and high elliptical orbits, Skif satellites for broadband Internet access and Marathon satellites. In addition, the group will include Yamal communication satellites, Smotr remote sensing satellites, and Berkut observation satellites.

Marafon-D was built by ISS Reshetnev to test the technologies for the operational Marafon satellite constellation.

The satellite was originally to be launched as a secondary payload on the Meteor-M 2-4 launch on Soyuz-2-1b Fregat rocket in February 2024, but has been removed from this launch and has been replaced by the Marafon-D-GVM mass model.
