Springbok is situated close to the intersection of the N7 and N14, 550km north of Cape Town. It is set in a narrow valley bisecting the granite domes of the Klein Koperberge - small copper mountains. The colorful history of Springbok is closely linked to the copper industry and is also the site of the first commercial mining operations in the country.
In 1852 the first copper mine was brought into operation by the mining concern of Philips and King [see entry "Blue Mine"]. It was bought from the Cloete family; and in 1862 the town of Springbokfontein was laid out. Rich copper deposits were discovered in the 1870's to the north of Springbok. Potential miners flocked to Okiep, where the deposits were found. The steady supply of drinkable water from the spring of Springbok made the town the centre for the mining prospectors.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Proterozoic : 1010 Ma to 996 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
