Early Permian skarn iron deposit of subvolcanic magmatic-hydrothermal filling (alteration) style, occurring in a rift on the southern margin of the Eastern Tianshan Mountains. The magnetite-rich garnet-diopside ore bodies are products of hydrothermal alteration. They occur in steeply dipping cracks in a diabase unit that contacts felsic schists to the north and gabbro to the south. Opencut mining has revealed that the ore bodies are intersected by multiperiodic diabase dykes trending in different directions.

Located in the southern part of the eastern Tianshan, Cihai is a large iron deposit with a resource of >100 Mt. The Mesoproterozoic schist is exposed in the central parts of the ore district and hosts parts of the Cihai iron ore. Diabase is the most common intrusive rock in the area of the Cihai open pit and is spatially related to the iron mineralization. The orebodies of the Cihai Fe deposit are generally hosted in the diabase, and some late dikes of diabase crosscut previously emplaced diabase as well as iron orebodies, indicating they were also emplaced after the formation of the orebodies. The Cihai deposit is composed of the Cihai, Cixi, and Cinan mining sections. The Cihai section is mined in a large open pit, which contains more than 90% of the iron ore reserves in the deposit. The much smaller resources in the Cixi and Cinan sections are being mined underground. The orebodies in the Cihai section are nearly parallel and may be present as stratiform masses, lens-like bodies, veins, and disseminations. The diabase and garnet-pyroxene skarn in the country rocks host the iron orebodies. The ores may be both massive and disseminated, but in places they may appear banded or brecciated.

Mineralization age: Early/Lower Cretaceous : 128.5 ± 0.3 Ma

Important note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
