Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Stone's Quarry; Hood Road Quarry; Hood Rd Quarry
A quarry in Miocene Waipoua basalt. Located at Aranga near Hood Road, about 35 km north of Dargaville.
The site is known for large cavities filled with zeolites, spectacular calcite crystals, and being one of the few sites in the world where cavansite is found.
Calcite is found often as dogtooth crystals and pinacoids and less commonly as pseudocubes and interpenetrating twins. Chabazite is common at the location, found in greenish basement rocks in fracture veins, sometimes with flecks of native copper within and under the crystals. Calcite lines vugs and cavities. Garronite is associated with chabazite and mixed with gobbinsite. The crystals of both gobbinsite and garronite are bladed, compact, or loosely radiating. Lévyne occurs in greenish basalt vugs as colourless tabular crystals on edge. Thomsonite occurs as white, colourless, or blue-green botryoids or as brown bladed crystals, compact and helictitic on balls of thomsonite or loosely radiating.
