Stratabound sedimentary-metamorphic copper deposits are hosted in rocks of the Proterozoic Kunyang Group, which is divided into three subgroups with eleven formations. Most of the copper deposits are located within the middle Kunyang subgroup, and a different type of copper deposit occurs in each of its three lower formations:
Xikuangshan (Xikangshan) type Fe-Cu deposit (Yinmin formation): iron ore layers with hematite and magnetite of oolitic or blocky structure in the middle of the Yinmin formation. Copper-bearing veinlets (chalcopyrite and chalcocite) are distributed in the iron ore layer and form an impregnation structure iron-copper ore deposit.
Dongchuan type copper deposit (Luoxue formation): This is the most important copper ore type in Dongchuan. Copper ore layers interbed or interlace with dolomitites to form layered ores. Chalcocite and chalcopyrite fill along algal layers in the algal dolomitites, which are deformed and produce the so-called "maweisi" (horse-tail-like) ores.
Taoyuan type copper deposit (Heishan formation): Chalcopyrite-calcite veinlets penetrate carbonaceous shales.
Hydrothermal sedimentary rocks are widely developed in the area. They consist of hydrothermal breccias that are cemented by copper sulfides, carbonate rocks with disseminated iron and copper ores, epidote-rich skarns, chert, and ferruginous siliceous rocks. The ore beds in the district frequently contain rounded concretions of several cms in diameter, which consist mainly of pyrite (Hua, 1989).
The Dongchuan ore field is the third largest copper mining area in China, extending over an area of about 660 km² around Dongchuan city, about 120 km north of Kunming. It includes the Tangdan, Luoxue, Yinmin, Xintang, Lanniping-Baixila, Lanniping-Suoyipo, and Shijiangjun copper mines, of which the Tangdan and Luoxue mines are the largest. The tonnage of the Tangdan mine alone nearly reaches that of a super-large copper ore deposit.
