Peggy Mine; Sunshine Mine
A manganese mine near Lake Crescent and the largest mine on the Olympic peninsula by both production and development. It worked three lenses of manganese ore in crushed limestone and greenstone. Several reverse faults offset the ore bodies. The host rock is part of the Crescent Formation and consists of Paleocene? and Eocene pillow basalts/greenstones similar to ocean ridge basalts, with associated deep water limestone deposits. It produced more than 50,000 tons of ore between 1923 and 1954.
