Stradner Kogel (Appel Steinbruch Hochstraden), Bad Gleichenberg, Bezirk Südoststeiermark, Steiermark, Österreich
Active quarry in basalt (hauyne-nephelinite). Located SSW of Stradner Kogel mountain (609 m).
The quarry is known for a variety of rare minerals, and the mineralogy is well studied.
On specimen labels, the locality is often only called "Wilhelmsdorf".
The Stradner Kogel is one of the highest peaks in the southeast of Styria. It is the highest point in the East Styrian hills, or Riedelland. It is of volcanic origin and, like the Gleichenberger Kögel 4 km to the north, belongs to the elongated Transdanubian volcanic region, which stretches from Slovenia across the Styrian hills to Burgenland and finally disappears into the subsoil of the Pannonian Plain.
The Stradner Kogel is located in the district of Southeast Styria, three kilometers south of Bad Gleichenberg and between the towns of Merkendorf, Wilhelmsdorf, and Hochstraden in the cadastral municipality of Hochstraden in the market town of Sankt Anna am Aigen. It is one of the most dominant mountains in Austria.
The somewhat elongated mountain ridge towers over the Sulzbach valley and the East Styrian hills by 300–400 meters and offers a wide view.
The volcanic rocks of the Stradner Kogel come from the younger phase of Styrian volcanism around 2 million years ago. As with most of the volcanic formations in southeast Styria from this period, the Stradner Kogel is essentially a phreatomagmatic maar diatreme, which was, however, accompanied by an extensive lava flow. As a result, the quarry at Stradner Kogel mainly contains nephelinite basalt. From north to south, the basalt mass of Hochstraden is 8 km long and 2 km wide. The nephelinite blanket reaches a thickness of 80 meters or more. The basalt of Hochstraden is considered one of the hardest in Austria. The quarry is also known as a rich location for many minerals such as barite, gismondine, hannebachite, haüyne, leucite, and the very rare motukoreaite, as well as spinel and chromite, gahnite, and magnetite, which belong to the spinel group. A total of 75 recognized mineral species have been documented for this site (as of 2018).
The Stradner Kogel is also considered the type locality for the mineral trattnerite.
