The City of Albany encompasses Albany itself, surrounding agricultural areas and coastal national parks. It is 410 kilometres south south-east of Perth along the southern coastline of Western Australia. The shire western border is just east of the town of Denmark, and extends eastwards till just before the Bremer Bay turnoff. Population estimated at 36 000 (June 2010).
European settlement was established in 1826, making it the earliest in Western Australia. It was Western Australia's major port from the mid 1800's to early 1900's, especially for the goldfields around Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. When the Fremantle port emerged, the economy shifted to timber, agriculture and whaling. The whaling station at Albany closed in 1978, and is now a museum (highly recommended).
Albany is on one of the most scenic harbours in Australia. Several national parks are found in the shire, with scenic, sometimes dramatic coastal views, and rare plant life and fauna. The town itself contains several museums, and a sandalwood perfume factory a little north of the town.
The shire is part of the Albany Fraser Orogen, to the south and south-west of the Yilgarn Craton. The orogen is orthogneiss and granite with large sheets of metagabbro, remnants of mafic dykes, and widespread metasedimentary rocks. The granite has been deformed and metamorphosed during mesoproterozoic orogenic activity. The granites are dominated by biotite granite, porphyritic granite and monzogranite, which form numerous hilly outcrops.
In particular in the Albany area, megacrystic monzogranite is the main type consisting of quartz, microcline, oligoclase/andesine and accessory biotite, opaque grains and apatite.
No large scale mining in the shire is known. Very limited historic gold production is known just north of the shire, both south and east of the Stirling Range. There are two deposits of silica sand in the Narrikup area.
Epidosite and Unakite (known locally as Albany Granite) are the only specimens seen as slabbed and polished rock. Supply appears largely limited to a specimen shop in the town.
