Zimná Voda REE-U-Au vein
Name(s) in local language(s):
Zimná Voda, Prakovce, okres Gelnica, Košický Kraj, Slovenská Republika
Quartz vein with U-Au mineralization was found in two 500 m long outcrops in distance of 300 m south of Prakovce village in Zimná Voda valley, 250 and 500 m north of Tri Studne hill. Surrounding rocks are chlorite-sericite phylite with quartzite lenses of the Bystrý Potok Formation. Uranium minerals and gold are disseminated in brownish quartz and they are visible with naked eye in some places.
The REE minerals at this site are locally gadolinium-dominant, which is very rare in the nature.
The hydrothermal REE–U–Au vein mineralisation at the Zimná Voda occurrence is hosted in the Lower Palaeozoic metamorphic rocks of the Bystrý Potok Formation, a part of the Gelnica Group in the Gemeric tectonic unit of the Western Carpathians, which is part of the Alpine-Carpathian Mountain belt. Two quartz veins (Western and Eastern) containing REE, U and Au mineralisation were found in the area. Xenotime-(Gd) was found in the Western vein. The vein is hosted in fine-grained micaceous phyllites interbedded with fine-grained quartzites. It has an E–W strike, total length of ∼90 m with an average dip of 65° to the S, and conforms to the schistosity of the host rocks. The thickness of the vein ranges from 3 to 30 cm. Along the contact, the rocks are intensively argillitised, and locally silicified, and impregnated by pyrite. Supergene alteration of pyritised rocks caused their limonitisation.
