Classification: Eucrite, monomict
Fall, 24 October 1899; 165 grams

After a fireball and loud booms in the early morning, a small stone was found. While the moderately brecciated Peramiho had travelled a long way before reaching the earth, its classification as a monomict eucrite indicates that its relatively homogeneous clasts and aggregates were almost entirely derived from nearby lithological units of its original parent body. Peramiho's primary constituents are pyroxene (mostly inverted pigeonite with exolved augite) and plagioclase (bytownite) eucrites. Not unsurprisingly, as a small rock it has not received a great deal of attention in recent decades, but is has sometimes been described as anomalous because of its relatively Mg-rich silicate mineralogy.

Current planetary science is busy trying to integrate our knowledge of HED (howardite-eucrite-diogenite) meteorites, asteroidal spectra and orbits, and the Dawn mission to Vesta into a coherent picture of asteroidal history and meteorites delivery. Peramiho is a very small piece of this enormous puzzle. For now, however, it appears that Peramiho is one of those meteorites whose components were aggregated ~4.5 billion years ago close to the surface of Vesta, before chance, circumstance, and impacts eventually brought it to the continent of Africa and the attention of humans.
