Köppen climate type:
The Pinnacles Bore copper area contains a number of small un-economic secondary copper deposits, within a 3 kilometre radius of the Southern Cross bore. The field is named after the Pinnacle bore, about 10 kilometres south south-west of the deposits. The deposits are a short distance both west and east of the Alatyeye Track, which heads north from The Gardens pastoral station access road to the Plenty Highway, bordering the eastern side of the Strangway Range.
Localised pockets can reach up to 30% Cu, with trace gold, silver and bismuth. The main secondary copper mineralisation found is malachite, azurite, chrysocolla, bornite, chalcocite, and chalcopyrite. Cuprite and native copper is rare, with some schorl and siderite. Copper mineralisation does not extend to a great depth below the surface, in fractures in quartz veins up to 1 metre wide, filling a series of north trending shears.
Johnnies Reward differs from the other deposits, as it is a small hypogene deposit, containing Pb and Zn mineralisation, in a lode of actinolite, and magnetite, with quartzite lenses, with calcareous margins.
In the 1940's, P. Ciccone mined the richer veins, then 1952 Kurt Johannsen, and finally John Vitosky 1964-1966, all shallow workings. None found sufficient ore reserves to continue for long. It is estimated the field has produced 163 tonnes of ore averaging 12.4% Cu, much probably hand picked.
