New Afton
A porphyry copper-gold deposit. The open pit mine, started in 1977, was backfilled after its closure. After an exploration in 2003 located another 91.78 million tons of ore, mining re-commenced in 2007.
Located 8 miles west of Kamloops on the Trans Canada Highway at an elevation of 2400 feet.
Deposit: L03 : Alkalic porphyry Cu-Au
The New Afton alkalic Cu-Au(-Ag ± Pd ± Pt) porphyry deposit in British Columbia. This mineral system hosts prominent magnetite vein swarms and lodes, similar to the occurrence of magnetite in IOA deposits, and several occurrences of massive magnetite ± apatite lodes, previously mined for iron, have been documented in the New Afton area. The Quesnelia terrane surrounding the New Afton area in southern British Columbia comprises Late Triassic volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks of the Nicola Group, intruded by the Iron Mask batholith. The Nicola Group consists of sequences of andesitic to basaltic flows, polylithic volcanic breccias, crystal tuffs with intercalated sedimentary rocks, and picrites, characterized by abundant pyroxene and olivine phenocrysts. These rocks have undergone regional metamorphism (lower greenschist facies) as well as contact metamorphism caused by adjacent intrusions.
Ore mineralization at New Afton is grouped into three stages: early hypogene mineralization, late hypogene mineralization, and supergene mineralization. The early hypogene stage is characterized by Cu-Au mineralization closely associated with areas of pervasive potassic alteration. The mineralization occurs as disseminations, crackle breccia infill, and stringers containing chalcopyrite, pyrite ± bornite, native gold, and electrum, with accessory albite, chlorite, magnetite, K-feldspar, quartz, rutile, and apatite. Magnetite typically appears as centimeter-long veinlets with anhedral to euhedral crystal forms, crosscut by later chalcopyrite, hematite (± specularite), and calcite veinlets. Two distinct paragenetic assemblages are recognized: an early assemblage of chalcopyrite-magnetite-biotite-quartz ± K-feldspar, with Pd-Ni-Co-rich pyrite, followed by a later assemblage of chalcopyrite-specularite-pyrite-carbonate ± quartz ± K-feldspar, which includes PGE-bearing minerals such as temagamite, mertieite, and sperrylite. The late hypogene mineralization stage is associated with narrow, discontinuous lenses of Cu-Au mineralization linked to argillic alteration. It is characterized by fine-grained sulfosalts (tennantite, tetrahedrite, enargite) and minor bornite as well as chalcocite-digenite, which overprint and partially replace earlier hypogene sulfides. The supergene mineralization stage resulted from the oxidation of hypogene minerals, forming various amounts of native copper, chalcocite, earthy hematite, and minor goethite, gypsum, cuprite, malachite, azurite, and conichalcite. This mineralization is found in the upper levels of the deposit, extending up to approximately 500 m below the surface.
