The 450 m N'Chwaning 2 shaft with an underground crushing station came into production in 1981.

Notes on the mineral list:

— as for the distinction between olmiite and poldervaartite from N'Chwaning II (and other localities), see https://www.mindat.org/mesg-104499.html

— charlesite, jouravskite, sturmanite and ettringite cannot be identified visually. All specimens are at best a 'guess' unless analysed, there are no visual properties to distinguish one from another, other mineral associations do not factor either.

ⓘ 'Braunite-II'
Formula: Ca(Mn3+,Fe)14(SiO4)O20
Description: Braunite II was first discovered in 1945 at Black Rock and described as ferrianbraunite. The phase was renamed braunite II by De Villiers and Herbstein in 1967 and its crystal structure was determined by De Villiers in 1980. Metallic-grey braunite II crystals have come from Wessels, Black Rock (up to two centimetres) and N’Chwaning II. The crystals are typically bipyramidal with complex terminations. In 1995, crystals up to three centimetres were found at Wessels mine, and a few very rare larger crystals were also collected at the time. These were associated with andradite garnet, hausmannite and occasionally yellow ettringite. Braunite II is not listed as a recognised species in the IMA RRUFF database. See De Villiers (1945), De Villiers and Herbstein (1967), De Villiers (1970), De Villiers (1980) and De Villiers (1989) for details.

ⓘ Cyprine
Formula: Ca19Cu2+Al4(Al6Mg2)(◻4)◻[Si2O7]4[(SiO4)10](OH)(OH)9
Description: In a specimen purchased as "manganvesuvianite", transmitted lighted microscopy showed the deep-red crystals in hand sample are actually optically zoned under the microscope, showing base colors of yellow-orange to red to purple (in addition to these base colors, the crystals are pleochroic as well). Microprobe analysis further showed that the crystals are also compositionally zoned, with the optically purple areas significantly enriched in Cu relative to the more optically orange areas; presumably the "blue" contribution of the Cu2+ added to the red of the Mn3+ results in the purple color? The zoned crystals range in composition from Cu-bearing manganvesuvianite to Mn-bearing cyprine (with observed Cu2+ up to 0.89 apfu). The zoned vesuvianite-group minerals occur as open space filling the sample in the dominant hausmannite (some of which is Pb-enriched). Minor Sr-enriched fluorapatite, braunite, Sr-free barite, and henmiterierite are also present.
