Broken Promise Mine
A former small underground Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag-Au mine located on 9 claims (Cairo, Memphis, Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, Chicago, Warren, George, and the Broken Promise), in the NE¼NE¼ sec. 20, T.23S., R.24E. (Bisbee 7.5 minute topo map), about 2 miles (3.22 km) SE of Bisbee, on private land. Produced 1909-1931. Owned by the Wolverine & Arizona Mining Co.
Mineralization is oxidized base metal sulfides in irregular replacement bodies in unaltered Cambrian Abrigo Limestone associated with a porphyry dike and strong fracturing. Bornite replaces pyrite. Alteration is gossan with Mn and Fe oxides induced by hydrothermal metamorphism.
Workings included two shafts, both found in the NE¼ of section 20. The shaft on the Broken Promise claim is 700 feet (ca. 213 m) deep. The shaft on the Warren claim (which adjoins the Queen and Shattuck properties) is 500 feet (ca. 152 m) deep. The shafts are about 800 feet (ca. 244 m) apart. One tunnel connects the two shafts.
Some 30,000 or more tons of ore were produced from 1916 to 1931. Reported more than $1,000,000 to 9/1942.
