A town within the Kambove territory.
Regionally, the Kamoya area is predominantly underlain by the Meso-Neoproterozoic Katanga Supergroup, with subordinate Tertiary and Quaternary strata. The Tertiary and Quaternary cover, mainly composed of alluvial, colluvial and eluvial layers, are distributed in valleys and basins, covering less than 15% of the area. The Meso-Neoproterozoic Katanga Supergroup, with a thickness of approximately 5–10 km, is subdivided into two units from base to top: The Roan Group and the Upper/Lower Kundelungu Group. The Roan Group comprises littoral to shallow and deep marine clastic sedimentary rocks and carbonate rocks (predominantly dolostone and dolomitic shale). The Mines Subgroup (R2) of the Roan Group serves as the primary ore-bearing host rock series in the region). It comprises evaporitic carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks formed in supratidal to hypersaline lagoon environments and contains remnants of stromatolites and algal reefs. Additionally, the Mwashya Subgroup (R4) of the Roan Group is termed the Upper Roan Group, while the RAT (Roches Argilo-Talqueuses) Subgroup (R1), Mines Subgroup (R2), and Dipeta Subgroup (R3) are collectively termed the Lower Roan Group.
The Upper and Lower Kundelungu Group are mainly composed of clastic sedimentary rocks (conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, sandy shale). The conglomerates at the base of the Lower Kundelungu Group and the Upper Kundelungu Group are terrigenous diamictites of glaciological origin that were associated with the global Sturtian glaciation (ca. 730 Ma) and the Marinoan glacial event (ca. 635 Ma), respectively. The large-scale Kamoa Cu deposit occurs near the redox interface of the Lower Kundelungu Group.
