Type:
Mid Atlantic Ridge south of the Romanche Trench near the equator.
The Rio de Janeiro Fracture Transform valley at 22°S is the deepest cross-passage on the SMAR, and the southward progression of the north Atlantic deep waters is interrupted above this region. This fracture coincides with a gap in the distribution of hydrothermal fields between 19°S and 23°S the topographically-controlled hydrography and sparse distribution of active vents in the 19°S–23°S region indicate a physical barrier. Therefore, the Rio de Janeiro Fracture Transform can be used to divide SMAR into a northern and a southern segment.
