Active quarry.
At the beginning of the Ordovician (+/- 500 million years), a sea called the "Salmian Sea" extended, among other places, in the commune of Lierneux. Thin layers of sand and clay were deposited at the bottom of marine basins and gave rise, through diagenesis, to sedimentary rocks. Following metamorphism phenomena (the Caledonian, Hercynian, and then Alpine orogenies), these were transformed into sandstone quartzophyllades, the current rocks.
It is a sedimentary rock formed from an alternation of small beds (laminae) sometimes composed of quartz, sometimes of clay, micas, and lamellae of organic matter intimately mixed with areas of microsparitic calcite.
