Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Milton Goldfield
The Norton Goldfield was originally part of the Milton pastoral lease.
Discovered by George Williams, and Charles Lett in 1871. Proclaimed a goldfield in 1879. William Carmichael was heavily involved with the goldfield for many years. Named after Albert Norton, member of the first Calliope Divisional Board. The alternative name Milton Goldfield, after the former pastoral station the goldfield is located on.
The goldfield encompasses some 107.6km2.
The complex nature of the ore caused much grief to the early miners, largely due to the chlorine absorbing nature of calcite. It is a polymetallic deposit containing gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc. Gold and silver were mined historically. Country rock is granite. Most of the gold won was from reefs, with only minor alluvial gold from the gullies.
First reported on in 1879, the goldfield was worked by sixty miners and two three head stamp batteries were in operation. In 1884, the Frampton United company constructed a chlorination plant, and five roasting furnaces, but a lack of water limited production. A 10 head stamp battery, and dry crusher installed 1888 also failed, as with the Advance Company attempts in 1890. The Conran Gold Mining Company took over Frampton United in 1891 also with little success. Carmichael erected a small chlorination plant 1895 and blast furnace 1899, but neither was successful. The Marodian Gold Mining Company came and went 1903-1904. Johan Gundolf around 1906 constructed an arrastra and 375 foot water race along Norton Creek. The Frampton Mine was active 1918 to 1928 with a ten head battery, and tramlines constructed from this to the mine. The Frampton Mine was re-opened by T.H. Smith in 1941, with the ore being sent to Chillagoe for processing.
Pacific Mining NL mined from an open pit on the Never Never Reef 1997. Norton Goldfields Company mined Never Never and Frampton 2004-2005.
Incomplete records show 8776 oz Au from 1879-1941.
Gold is found in narrow quartz reefs within the Miriam Vale Granodiorite. Gold and silver are accompanied by galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, within a matrix of sulphide mineralisation of pyrite, arsenopyrite, and marcasite, hosted in quartz-calcite veins.
Note: This is not to be confused with the Norton Goldfield in Western Australia.
