Coedmore quarry

Located in portion "Natcem" of Bellair 823, Bellair, Durban.
Co-ordinates: 29deg. 52'S, 30deg. 52'E.

A narrow, eastward-dipping, Phanerozoic dolerite sill (Stormberg series, Karroo System) has been intruded into sandstone (Natal series, Cape System). Pockets and narrow fissures in the dolerite host crystallised minerals (prehnite, epidote, apophyllite, quartz, calcite). A series of near-vertical NE/SW-trending fissure-breccia zones are developed in the sandstone, and these host carbonate assemblages (calcite, siderite, with minor quartz, barite, goethite, pyrite, and much white clay). Operations began in 1928 and the quarry is still being actively worked.
A second pit on the property works tillite (Dwyka series, Karroo system).
