I love Basic Instructions.

I apologise if any Transfolk find this comic at all offensive, but I didn't. I think it's hilarious. Hence my posting it here.

(FYI, if you want to know what's so offensive so you know whether or not to click on it, it says that TRON fans like to be called Tronnies, and another character asks if that's short for TRONssexuals or TRONsvestites. I find this very, very funny.)

An amazing bundle of thought-provoking awesome

From transgender (original post here):

So brown_betty puts out a call for artwork of male comic book characters in 'female' comic book poses in an effort to examine the stark gender divide in comic books.

This prompts ratcreature to post some scans from a guide to drawing comic characters, including sections on how to draw comic porn stars women.

In a brilliant display of awesome, vito_excalibur 'fixes' the pages, switching all the men and women.

Of course, it's meant to point out how ridiculous the comic book extremes are. And in fact, I found all the characters in the original book kinda creepy. But in the fixed version, I have to say that I found all the fixed characters interesting and awesome. All the pretty femme boi heroes and super-buff womyn heroes.

Anyway, I don't (for once) have a lot to say on the matter. Just wanted to bring this interesting gender experiment to the community's attention. Thought y'all might find it interesting. :)

Three panels. Holly and Gramma in the kitchen. Gramma is holding a clipboard. Holly is irate. First panel: Holly says, 'Why do I have to make the muffins?! Is it because I'm the girl?! Andy works with tools, and I make muffins?!' Second panel: Holly says, 'What would Rosie the Riveter say about this? She didn't make no stinking muffins!' Third panel: Gramma says, 'I was hoping for blueberry, not 'stinking'.' Holly says, 'Give me rivets or give me death!!'

Four panels. Holly and Gramma in the kitchen. First panel: Gramma says, 'Holly, I asked you to make muffins because I didn't want Andy messing up Aunt Joan's kitchen.' Second panel: Gramma says, 'She's busy with baby Luci. She doesn't need any extra work.' Third panel: Gramma says, 'Don't worry. You'll be doing plenty of heavy lifting at the build site.' Holly says, 'Yeah, well, so will you.' Fourth panel: Gramma says, 'How so?' Holly says, 'Have you ever had my muffins?'

Second panel, which is a thought bubble, connected to the first by a thought bubble line: The second person shows the first a chart on an easel depicting the pattern on the floor, and says, 'Well, my instinct is to step only on black tiles, but they're too far apart. So I'm letting myself walk on the tiles directly in line with the black ones, but that means that when we walk diagonally, I have to step in a pattern where ...' Third panel: Second person says, 'I'm not walking funny.'

Four panels. April and Shannon are walking down the hall and climbing a flight of stairs at school. Ahoy, Kids!

The local Princess is starting a new webcomic. She writes:

http://ahoykids.com/

Starting Tuesday, 13 Feb.: "Ahoy Kids: The Adventures of Pirate Mom."

New episodes weekly - served fresh every Tuesday.

Supernova's going to put together some of those RSS things (whatever they are) and in general, we'll try to make it easy for people to access the comic every week. I might start a LJ just for posting the comic. After all, someone might want to read the comic and NOT read about the sexual misadventures and hygiene problems I drone on about in this blog.

So I've been busy. I've been drawing up a backlog of comics so that for two months or so I can promise to hit my Tuesday deadlines. After that, I'm on my own.

The "ahoy kids!" website is brutally empty and plain, I know. It will stay that way for a bit. For now, I'm just doing the comic. Like Topsy, the site will just have to grow over time.

By the same token, I'm not going to do much about promoting the comic for now. I'm just going to put it up and see if anyone likes it. Besides, I hate following a link to a "great new comic!" and then there are only two episodes. It seems like most webcomics never get to #4 anyway.

Now, I just have to learn to draw pirates.

Anyway, see you Tuesday!
