DRIVE-BY POST! (because I don't really have the attention span or energy for anything else)

+ I passed my national massage exam, thank the fucks, because that shit was hard. I don't think it's fair to be tested on stuff that's illegal in my state, but whatever. I PASSED, I PASSED, AS LONG AS I KEEP LICENSE UP TO DATE I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE IT EVER AGAIN. Now to get everything ready for the state exam.

+ Sign-ups for merlin_horror are currently open, and don't forget to donate a prompt if you can think of one.

+ For those who post on AO3, I was talking to loaded_march about various ways to implement visual elements to fics without having to rely on static images, and I've started to design various work skins? A work skin is basically a style sheet for your work and a way to create pizazz from the traditional text. So far I've only posted two: How to make Deadpool's Boxes and How to make sticky notes (aka Post-Its). If you found these helpful and would be interested in seeing more, could you please like and reblog? I'm planning on making one emulating letters/fliers next, followed by iOS text messages.

Okay, so, despite all my grumbling, I adore modding merlin_horror. But, it struck me: how awesome would it be to have a fest like it for all fandoms, including RPF and Original? I was looking around and didn't find any, so I'm thinking about making my own. It won't be running until next year (Signups in the summer, posting in October, of course), but I guess I just want to get an idea of interest before I get too involved in planning it? It would be a low-key fic and art fest, with 1k min and people able to submit their own ideas and whatnot. So if you could, please fill out the following form?

Poll #1942930 Horror Fesr

Please check all that you'd be interested in

Being a part of the mod team
6(8.7%)
Prompting brainstorming ideas
13(18.8%)
Submitting fic/art
17(24.6%)
Reader/Viewer of pieces
32(46.4%)
None of the above/not interested
1(1.4%)

I just realized I spelled it "Horror Fesr", lol. Oh well.

Also, if you wouldn't mind sharing it on your journal to see if anyone else is interested? This poll is open to everyone! Thank you!

So, I know this is poor timing, especially considering that the first check-in for paperlegends is on Friday. But as much as I love my original idea--Arthur is an amusement park owner, Merlin is a ride mechanic with magic--the words just aren't coming. :/

I think I have a replacement idea though, but I wanted to get people's opinion on it first. Basically, it'd be a Canon AU with Aladdin/Robin Hood type elements. It'd start with Uther keeping Arthur from public view since his birth, because Uther is so worried about his son, so Arthur basically grows up in seclusion with only a few guards. At the same time, Merlin comes to Camelot at earlier time then in the original canon, and determines he hates how royalty looks down on the commoners. So he starts to be a thief, stealing for the poor, and exploring all the hidden passageways in Camelot (helped along with his magic). It's during this time that he manages to find Arthur, and the two of them begin a secret correspondence, where Merlin sneaks Arthur out of the castle every now and then so he can see Camelot. They grow up together, but Merlin never tells Arthur about his magic, because Arthur goes on and on about his father's views that magic is wrong.

Then one day, Merlin's magic is exposed somehow, and Arthur tells Merlin he won't have him executed, but Merlin needs to leave. Merlin acts like he does, but stays close by in case Arthur needs him. Years pass, and Uther grows ill, so Arthur is finally allowed to be in public. During this time, Merlin has been still working on his vigilante work, hiding under a mask and going by the name as Emrys as he continues to help peasants. It's kind of a cat and mouse chase between him and Arthur, filled with banter and such. Agravaine is going to be worked in there as well somehow, plus other things, but yeah.

Thoughts? Would people would be interested, or should I try something else? I know some people don't like kid fic, but the mentions of their childhood are going to be brief and at the beginning, so hopefully it won't be a problem. I've just been inching to do more Canon AU, and while people have already told me just to turn my Perverse Bang into my PL (because it's at 9k so far), I just don't know.

One of my weaknesses has to be a good dollar store. Seriously, I can walk into one, not needing a single thing, and yet walk out with two full bags of stuff. Self, when are you going to realize that just because it's a dollar doesn't mean you can got crazy?

Stores I have a similar reaction to are Five Below (which is kind of like a dollar store, except everything is under five dollars, hence the name. And I do mean everything), Aldi's (which is cheap grocery store because they use their own brands and have a low overhead) and thrift stores. Does anyone else get like this, or am I the only one who gets excited over the little things? XD;

To-Do List:
- Write at least 1k for Perverse Bang (I think I managed to get 700 something earlier when I was waiting for my doctor's appt. Well, until my tablet's battery started to die.)
- Read moonlightwish's snippet and break it down for her. (So far, I really like the changes, but I want to devote time to actually writing it out. :D)
- Figure out what I'm going to do for merlin_hotrecs (Do I really want to sign up for another commitment? APPARENTLY I DO!)
- Read We're All Freaks Here and figure how it would be to make a cover for the upcoming podfic. Because, dude, Teen Wolf AND Hellboy? FUCK YES GIVE IT TO MEEEEEEEEEEEE
- Reread taking the bus to chinatown and figure out a cover for that, because zomg, Stiles giving mittens to Derek is adorable.

Oh man, lately I've been plagued with the "At Least It's Not Raining!"(TM) cliche at work, and while, yeah, I'd like to whine and gripe about it, doing so just makes me angrier. So excuse me as I stew in my awkward "My manager is an idiotic shitnickeled douchewaffle and I want to straight up punch him" juices.

Instead, I wanted to open the floor to another fandom discussion. oflittleuse brought this up in a comment on my last discussion post, but I had been thinking about it for awhile myself, and that's the idea of writing stories based on locations the author is personally familiar with.

Now, I'm going to come out and say flat out that I've done this before, but more along the lines of used real locations as inspiration. For example, the brief aquarium scene in "Drown My Sorrows in Yours" is based on actual aquarium, a fact I was reminded of when I visited the Tampa Aquarium just recently. I took a (albeit blurry) photograph here, most likely in the spot Arthur would be at when Merlin was at the glass in the front.

Now, that's just a small scene, so I don't know if it really counts. But I borrowed from real life again when it came to my Big Bang this year. The seaside cliffs are a relatively major part of the story, and are actually inspired by Black's Beach in California (photo not mine). My mother grew up in the area and told me about people jumping off the cliffs, so that idea kind of stuck with me in ways I didn't realize until I starting writing my BB.

However, even though my stories were based on actual places, I never actually had them set there, and the reason is simply because I'd feel weird placing characters in an actual real life setting, if that makes any sense. For example, I went to Annapolis this past weekend, and as I was walking the city streets that have been there for ever with the Naval Academy near by, I thought of how fun it would be to set a story there. To have men in naval uniforms (mm, yes) having a Superman ice cream at Storm Brothers and watching the water, or maybe a chase scene through the narrow alleyways.

But as much as I would enjoy it, I don't know how those who have never been there would, because they don't have the same experience I do with the city. So to me, it feels like they might not be able to connect as well, and I would fear I would either a) explain the city too much and the story would become a tour guide, or b) explain it too little and leave the reader scratching their head, wondering why a certain places or person is important.

I think having a story set at an actual place can be limiting as well. Going back to my BB, I mentioned Black's Beach to my artist, itzcoatl, as my inspiration for Ealdor in the story. We discussed how the town would look (so she could get a better idea for her artwork), and proposed the idea of the houses being painted in bright colors. While there's probably towns in the U.S. that are painted this way, it always struck me as a European theme, and I loved and wanted it. It's just a small detail in the story, but I think it better described the feeling of Ealdor that I wanted instead of just relying on what Black's Beach looked like.

I fear I'm just rambling and perhaps not making much sense, so I'll stop here with a question: when you write, do you base your stories off actual locations, or do you prefer to make your own?

Finally, here is your PL rec:
In Joy and Woe, as in a Doubtful Ease (Story by angelqueen04, art by satavaisa)
Summary: (minor Arthur/Gwen, Arthur/Merlin friendship, PG-13, 49k) Morgana's second occupation has wrought extensive damage and in the weeks following his restoration, Arthur struggles to help Camelot recover its former strength. With starvation a looming threat to his people, he seeks the aid of his foreign allies. However, a helping hand comes from an unexpected source - the kingdom of Cornwall, which has been closed and silent to Camelot for decades. After accepting an invitation to visit the mysterious kingdom and its equally mysterious ruler, Arthur finds himself thrust into a web of secrets kept from him his entire life.
I admit, I was a little wary about going into this, but this is a wonderfully epic canon story. For those of you who are not interested in A/G, their scenes are very brief, and it's mostly about A/M going on adventure. What really struck me were the OCs; they were well-crafted, and it was very believable how they were weaved into the story and Arthur's past. The diary excerpts annoyed me at first, but I soon grew to appreciate them with the rest of the story.

I know I am so behind on my paperlegends recs, but they're going to be delayed a little more as I scramble to get ready for my trip. I am not ready in the slightest, and I'm starting to freak out a little. Also, I have resigned to the fact that I won't have this fic done in time for the Teen Wolf contest, haha.

However! I did want to open the floor for a fandom discussion on stereotypes in fanworks, particularly concerning nationalities. While the following examples are from a certain fanfiction (which I will not name, so if you recognize it, please don't give it away--I really don't want to bring drama to it), this isn't the first time I've come upon it, unfortunately.

What do I mean? Well, here, I'm just going to paraphrase a scene for you:
Characters A and B are being given an educational tour, and someone else from the crowd asks a question. Granted, it is a pretty silly question, but hey, the person was curious. A and B snicker and call the person an idiot among other unflattering things.

Not that horrible, right? Yeah, A and B come as slight jerks, but hey.

But let's put in the whole thing: the author put in the narrative that the person was a "large American woman". Bravo, author, not only have you perpetuated a stereotype, you have a little bit of fat-shaming and misogyny in there too.

Okay, maybe that's not enough to get pissed over, but it wasn't the first time I got the feeling of American bashing. Earlier, there was a mention of Texan tourists (haha, yeah, I'm making it really obvious now what story this is, oops) and how they were mispronouncing locations and arguing loudly.

Err, guess what? People have accents. They're going to pronounce things different. It doesn't mean they're stupid or ignorant, just that's how they pronounce things.

(Sidenote: I really hate, hate, hate when people try to type out accents in fanfiction, because most of the time they completely miss the ball and the character sounds more like a caricature. But I digress.)

The real kicker is that both of these scenes were not related to the plot at all. They just came off as superfluous and just a way to show how A and B's nationality is so superior to America's. This doesn't make A and B look important in my eyes, but just snobbish jerks.

It's not that I'm all "RAR I LOVE AMERICA HOW DARE YOU," but more of wondering what's the point? It wouldn't be considered acceptable to write stereotypes about other nationalities (at least, I hope it wouldn't, but I have seen it >_<), so why?

TL;DR I really hate seeing stereotypes in story narrative, and I am wondering why people think it's okay.

What about you flist? Agree, disagree, or don't really care? I am fully willing to accept that I might be overreacting a tad.
