Or, doing those things I ought to have done/been doing already, maybe.

Well, not quite that, but it was one of those days when after several days of flopping around feeling that not much was getting done and general apathy not entirely attributable to the weather I actually -

Rang the dental practice to reschedule my hygienist appointment because now Condoms Are Go it's less convenient than it was.

Okay, this only came up yesterday anyway: a younger scholar got in touch (prompted by former colleague) over thing they are doing and hoping for input if not actual collaboration from me, and I am not sure about collaboration but feel I could advise, and maybe, blurb or something?

Also, is yonks since was in contact with former colleague so emailed them.

While I was on email roll contacted person i/c archive I did research in some while ago and am contemplating doing a piece on fruits of my research about any constraints on quoting the material.

Sat down to beginning writing what I am intending saying about the Powerpoint slides for Condom Talk.

Did some updates for website.

Had some technical communications re talk.

Phew.

Or that's what it feels like, over the last just over a week.

There was going to the solicitors to sign our wills.

There was going over to [personal profile] coughingbear and [personal profile] hano's for a get-together (very nice to see people!)

There was deciding that maybe a knee support would be advantageous for the knee which has been being bit wonky of late so I ordered one Click and Collect from the local Argos. And it does seem to ameliorate the situation somewhat though I think I probably need to set about making a GP appointment about it, since it has not gone away in a few days as I hoped it would.

In other health matters have been being mildly hassled by my dental practice about booking a hygienist appointment, which, when I got round to, found they could not actually fit me in for for the next 4 weeks.

There was going to Book Launch for work by a long-term acquaintance in academic field, at rather elite venue in The City, a bit of a faff to get to, though part of that might have been getting off the bus at the wrong stop, though building works occluding street names did not help. Very few people I knew apart from Author, who was besieged by people wanting her to sign copies of The Book, but had nice chat with an editor who knew somewhat of My Earlier Work.

Yesterday I flopped at home apart from attending an online seminar (actually a substitution offered for the one I'd booked for last week which was cancelled, felt it would be civil to attend).

Today we boogeyed on down to the Register Office to Register Our Intention of Civil Partnership, at which they interrogate one not only about previous marriages etc but endeavour to ascertain whether one is Under Duress.

I was going to say 'double whammy' but in fact the general checkup and hygienist session both went off without any undue issues.

Going down the road to get to the Tube there was some kind of filming going on round about the parade of shops opposite the playing field - I did not linger as it was entirely chokka with mysterious vehicles and equipment.

Dentist, as stated, could not find anything wrong but has recommended some Extra Speshul Toothpaste, which normally you have to have a prescription for but they were able to sell me a couple of tubes.... not literally under the counter.

New hygienist, and as is the wont of hygienists, they have their own way of doing things - I was not expecting the whooshy water thing so early in the game - and also they find something that no other hygienist has noted that one should be doing, in this case involving a rare and unusual kind of toothbrush (which I have managed to source via eBay).

I was intending combining this jaunt with a couple of errands in Camden Town.

May I say I was deeply unimpressed with what Rymans has to offer in the way of seasonal cards, I thought they would have a far large selection. Managed to find something, but, grump.

Buying something from the pharmacy counter in Boots was stuck behind somebody apparently stocking up possibly for an expedition into the wilderness.

The threatened rain did indeed come on as I emerged from Boots, I had hoped that my weather app was looking on the gloomy side.

oursin: Drawing of hedgehog in a cave, writing in a book with a quill pen (Writing hedgehog)

So yesterday I had further converse with another person apropos giving a talk as part of a series of events in connection with an exhibition of archives at a local record office some months hence and they sound keen, and it is something I can do, and have a fair amount of material including visual stuff already. Plus, besides expenses, there will also be a modest honorarium - they actually asked what do I usually get paid - errrr.

So there's that.

And the long review essay is finally in production and while I had some rather confusing emails about this yesterday I think this is down to Academic Journals Having Really Confusing Systems, it is indeed going ahead, and I was obliged to compose a short biographical note, both to reflect current institutional state and also be pertinent to topics addressed in review (my last bio note leaned rather heavily on my relationship with Sid).

And I am beginning to get to grips with article for review, though slightly fearing I may be Interrogating From the Wrong Perspective (journal is Not My Disciplinary Field, though article certainly overlaps it).

Have had the very cheering news that a conference I thought I would never get to again because it would involve transatlantic travel, is coming to London next year, yay yay yay, I am already pondering a paper.

In other personal news, have booked dental checkup and hygienist appointment for next week.

And in other news, the National Trust has reached its target to buy the land around the Cerne Giant:

The money will be used to improve access to the 55-metre (180ft) figure and to link up a patchwork of habitats, improving conditions for species such as the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly.
It will also enable further archaeological work to help solve the enduring mystery of whom the giant depicts, and when and why it was created.

Last week was definitely a trifecta of Electrical Stuff.

Okay, I had been suspecting for some time that the fan heater in the front room was an ex-fan heater, and plugging it into a different socket (rather than an extension cord) confirmed this.

Have now ordered a convection heater (Which Best Buy), allegedly arriving tomorrow.

Last Tuesday around 6 am there was a power cut - it only lasted about 90 minutes, but involved a certain amount of resetting appliances which had become confused - also UKPowerNet only finally alerted me about this event by text several hours after things were back to more or less normal.

What I had not expected and accounted for in resetting things was that my clock alarm had decided that the time my alarm was set for was 6 am, so I got a rude awakening the following morning.

The other thing - and this was positively sinister - was that my electric toothbrush suddenly started buzzing away all by itself on the bathroom window ledge and was very very reluctant to be switched off. How is it not scary when this sort of thing happens?

Anyway, next morning it was apathetic about being switched on and is now an ex-toothbrush. A new one - not a top Which Best Buy as those are hugely expensive, but about third on the list which is on promotion at various outlets - currently expected. I have a backup but would rather this had not happened the week I am due for a trip to the dental hygienist.

oursin: A C19th illustration of a hedgehood, with a somewhat worried expression (mopey/worried hedgehog)

Just one of those weeks that felt like a strain - lower back flareups and insomnia and long-scheduled commitments that could not be deferred -

Though I did get a few small bits of life admin accomplished, like finally making an appointment for the first session of dental inlay work and chasing up whether journal reviews editor actually got my review.

But at the moment having the blahs.

oursin: Hedgehog saying boggled hedgehog is boggled (boggled)

Just back from dental checkup - no major problems, one tooth could do with having an inlay done, unurgent.

Not bad for one of my years, eh?

The other day I was flitting around online and I came across some advice page where a young(ish) woman was complaining that her ma kept relying on her to do a fairly simple basic computer thing for her own business enterprise (!!!) even though daughter had A Life and increasingly busy career of her own -

- but, she goes, what can you expect, Mother Is An Old and they are not at home with Ye Tech, alas.

Age is given and Ma is young enough to be My Daughter, and not just Had I Been A Gymslip Mother in the 1960s, or even had I rushed to the registrar's office straight after receiving my degree -

For in those halycon days, my little ones, although we received GRANTS to go and study, did a lady-scholar marry while pursuing a tertiary education her grant was seriously reduced -

No, I could have been out into the world some few years before succumbing to maternity.

So really, that is no excuse, I don't consider that makes her even An Old - menopausal brain fog perchance? - but honestly, a woman of those years has had every opportunity to get up to speed with extremely basic computer operations, as in, creating documents and transmitting them to the persons with whom her business is dealing, in fact I don't know how she has managed to avoid this knowledge.

One suspects she is just exploiting Daughter.

oursin: a hedgehog lying in the middle of cacti (hedgehog and cactus)

Well, yesterday, besides achieving valid British Library reader pass, in case I ever decide to go and do research there (I think there are/were also some offsite advantages, or at least, I tried to avail myself of some facility on their site some while ago and was told 'not if you are not in possession of current pass'- I think recently enough that it was not something obliterated by cyberattack??) -

- anyway, the reason I actually got myself together with expired pass and acceptable ID was that my dental practice is almost opposite BL and I had a hygienist appointment.

And apart from a couple of small things where I could give them a bit more brush action, I am keeping the ol' toofypegs in pretty good nick, considering.

So those things were fairly on the okay side of the balance.

On another prickly paw, something about the physio exercises for my hips set off a lower-back flare - not as bad perhaps as the one in May but I am now proceeding with caution, and building up numbers rather than doing the full sets of repetitions.

In the realm of Internette Troublez, partner has been having Issues with a certain Rail Company booking tickets, where they are booked - y/n? - charged to card but not actually available to download - this is iterating. Sigh.

While Publishing Person and Web Manager for my fictional endeavours is having An Issue with FTP, and as they are the one I tend to turn to when having Techno Problems, uhhhhhh. Am now communicating with Internet Provider Support Team.

There’s no excuse for ugly people’: controversial dentist Mike Mew on how ‘mewing’ can make you more attractive:

The orthodontist’s strange mouth exercises are beloved by incels seeking a manlier shape – and a fast-growing TikTok trend in classrooms around the world. So why has he been struck off the dentists’ register?

I don't know if the General Dental Council is like the General Medical Council and strikes off for ADVERTISING (quite aside from the horrendous things this awful guy is doing) but it strikes me that the way he is promoting himself would have been way, way beyond a lot of the things the GMC was taking exception to. But maybe times change.

But honestly. This is probably because I have an perhaps unusual knowledge of medical (including dental) quackery and its promotion, and common themes are:

There Is One Big Reason For All Your Problems

And

One Simple Trick (which I have) To Fix Them.

(Cites here, so that you know that I am not making this up all out of my own head, to Alex Comfort, The Anxiety Makers, Ann Dally, Fantasy Surgery, and a tip of the hat to Rob Darby, A Surgical Temptation.)

Okay, this is at the other end of the alimentary canal to Sir Arbuthnot Lane's Cure For All Evils (caused by Chronic Intestinal Stasis), but I think we can see the pattern repeating here.

Not saying that maybe, somewhere in this, there is something that may be helpful in some, specific cases, but let us consider e.g. radium in the 1920s. Yes, it was really, really useful in treating certain forms of cancer: it was not a cure-all and downing massive amounts of radium tonic just left a person, well, radioactive, if the tonic actually contained any active principle at all.

I am also boggled at the assumptions about beauty, and trying not to comment on this guy's own appearance, but to remark that the Hapsburgs ruled swathes of Europe for centuries without manly square jaws, hmmm, plus, has this chap ever been into an art gallery in his life??? Is there one pattern of beauty or are there many?

Just reading what he thinks the epitome makes me want to assert the true loveliness of consumptive pallor, heightened by just a touch of hectic feverish flush, wilting picturesquely on a fainting couch.

Am progressing towards getting physio for my shoulders - contacted the Musculo-Skeletal Service by phone; who then texted me a link to register with them, and I also got a link from the online portal to complete online details. I did the registration thing but I didn't actually deal with this immediately and the portal link timed out. However they sent it again the following day and I expeditiously engaged with the chatbot about my condition.

So, today I had a phonecall making me an appointment for an initial phone consultation preliminary to face-to-face interaction, just over a week hence.

Well, at least things are moving forward....

I have also been sent a reminder that I am due a dental hygienist appointment - it seems like only yesterday I last had one but I think all the toing and froing for other dental matters may have confused my time-scale on this. I've just checked and it was only October, this seems a bit of a short interval.

Let us wish William Blake a Happy 267th, and again, as I posted a few years ago when considering how to celebrate this auspicious day, The weather is perhaps not quite what one would wish for playing Adam and Eve in the garden, as is reputed he did with his wife, but I suggested some alternatives, and so did commenters.

Today I got the filling that fell out replaced: this was done very expeditious.

Back again next week for the implants.

Yay modern dentistry, I suppose.

***

I have been Irked the last couple of days by somebody emailing me, that retired nearly 10 years ago, with a query relating to their research in the archives at Former Workplace. They are located abroad but are currently in London until the end of the week.

I depose:

a) that you should have asked these questions before you set off on your research travels.

b) you should probably address them to the persons currently i/c the collections who will have a much more current idea of what is there and has been catalogued, no?

c) have you actually considered that your project may encounter issues around Data Protection? (they are based in the EU, surely they are aware of these things?)

I will also admit that the peeves are rioting around me in the supposition that the very helpful hand-curated thematic guides to archival sources that were once one of the prides of our operation have gone the way of the dodo, and the current catalogue interface is a nightmare.

It may possibly be that somebody helpfully said that they should talk to that Very Helpful and Exceedingly Knowledgeable Dr Oursin, but I really think there is no substitute for being in quotidien up to date contact with the archivesto answer this sort of enquiry.

oursin: Photograph of a statue of Hygeia, goddess of health (Hygeia)

Okay, had second dental appointment of week and now have proper crown on tooth from whence old crown popped off, and preparatory work done for implanting of implants in a fortnight's time.

HOWEVER

Last night a filling on one of my front teeth disintegrated - feeling no pain thereform, just generally vaguely uncomfortable - and this could not be patched while I was in the chair this pm, I have to go back next week. SIGH.

oursin: Photograph of a statue of Hygeia, goddess of health (Hygeia)

Appointment today with the dental implant guy, who was v pleased with the way things have gone on, and - oh joy - the next phase can be incorporated into my existing appointment later this week with my usual dentist which was to replace the crown that came off the other week, by extending it somewhat.

In other corporeality stuff, really should get round to setting up an eye-test.

***

In other news, did a podcast interview with a student yesterday - apparently this is A Thing these days, that students find A Nexpert to interview on some historical subject (I daresay there is some equivalent in other subjects?)? and make a podcast? o tempora, o mores, etc.

(And having turned one eager young thing down on the grounds I was not sufficiently A Nexpert, this was something I was fuming about Before It Was Cool, i.e. complete myth invented by 1 'historian' in the 90s which Will Not Die, though at least there is increasing pushback, so felt I should do it.)

oursin: Brush the Wandering Hedgehog by the fire (Default)

Health stuff:

Had a telephone appointment with a GP about results of my routine health check the other week, concern over somewhat high cholesterol level - the good news is, I'm not diabetic, but I should endeavour to get that cholesterol down. I already consume a fairly healthy diet (maybe I need to cut down on the margeritas, though), so it's probably down to upping the exercise, within the constraints of the arthritis. Apparently one can book directly to the local NHS physio place, which might be an idea though who knows how long the wait is. Various links supplied to Exercises for the Old and In Pain.

Dentist yesterday: managed to get so much work done on where the crown used to be that they cancelled the additional appointment today and I only need to go back in 2 weeks. Yay.

***

On walk today, observe that the waterlilies on the eco-pond (still seething with INVASIVE PREDATORY GOLDFISH) are endeavouring one last reprise of their Monet tribute act.

***

Have finally (if temporarily) got back access to former workplace email. Going through to see who I need to inform that it will be an ex-email address very shortly.

***

That annoying thing when somebody has given my name to somebody else as a person who is an expert on something on which I am not actually an expert: it is something which is adjacent to things I have worked on, I reviewed a book or books on it quite some considerable time ago, and I have not been keeping up with the historiography, except in the sense of having a feeling that there has possibly been some important recent work. I am so not the person to ask to be on your podcast about it. Grrr.

oursin: Photograph of a statue of Hygeia, goddess of health (Hygeia)

It may be remembered that I was being nagged apropos of a trip to the dental hygienist.

Well, at the weekend I had the joyous experience of one of my dental crowns detaching itself: I did managed to catch it before swallowing it.

So priority 1 yesterday was making appointment with dentist about that, and asking could this be incorporated with sandblasting the gnashers while I was there, and it could.

So today off I trotted, and had my pearlies polished and shone.

And my dentist is of the opinion that crown needs entire replacing though (relief) the root is in healthy condition.

So I am down for several trips in connection with this in the next few weeks, plus an appointment to do with next phase of implants.

Wot a round of fun and jollity, eh, wot larks.

Plus, had a text from the GP requesting that I make a routine review appointment to discuss the findings of my health check last week, as the cholesterol is a little high. As far as I can see from looking at the test results online, it is the Right Sort of cholesterol that is on the high side, but so are some other things. So anyway, have made phone appointment for next week.

Sometime I need to fit in an eyetest, but for all they say slots are going fast, when I checked yesterday they had ones for the next day and the whole of the week, so I'm not greatly perturbed there.

oursin: Photograph of a statue of Hygeia, goddess of health (Hygeia)

Nothing personally bothersome (I think) here -

Finally had a reminder - I had never had any original notification that I had an appointment - that my appointment at the Dermatology Clinic of UCH was next Tuesday. As the reason for this is no longer there, following the prescription of the More Powerful Steroid Ointment, I logged in to the system to cancel it.

I went in for my Health Check at GP practice this pm - conducted by a Nurse Practitioner, as all it actually involves is taking of blood pressure, weighing, collecting of blood samples, and inquisition into one's habits of diet, exercise, drinking etc. My BP is normal and my weight, I consider, is acceptable. Further intelligence presumably may come.

Now I have to make appointment with dental hygienist, which had nagging text about, and might as well book general checkup at same time. While there, must chase what is state of play re implants, I thought further action would have happened by now.

Also being chased up for eye-test, so should book that.

In other health-related news: OMG Don't Be Ananda:

Ananda said that she went against her doctor’s recommendation to have a double mastectomy after she was diagnosed. “My plan at first was to get out excessive toxins in my body. I felt like my body is intelligent, I know that to be true. Our bodies are brilliantly made,” she said. “I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way.” So, Ananda decided to use homeopathic remedies in addition to medication and radiation. She also focused on her sleep and diet. But last year, she learned that her cancer had spread.
Now, Ananda regrets her treatment decision.

oursin: Animate icon of hedgehog and rubber tortoise and words 'O Tempora O Mores' (o tempora o mores)

Yes, I know 'English teeth' are deemed unaesthestic, but perhaps that's better than wildly changing one's gnashers to accord with what turns out to be a constantly changing dental aesthetic: Jawbreakers Young patients want beautifully imperfect veneers. They’re getting pain, debt, and regret.

I may have had a fair amount of dental interventions (some of which have probably been due to overtreatment in earlier days), but at least I have not gone in for dental veneers:

[D]ental veneers are invasive medical prosthetics, and in many cases they alter patients’ teeth drastically and permanently. The most common form are porcelain veneers, which typically need to be glued onto a rough surface, created by shaving off a layer of the patients’ teeth. There is no dental procedure that can replace the lost enamel. Composite veneers, which allow for a resin to be applied directly onto teeth, can in theory avoid this damage, so long as there are no complications. In the very best cases, porcelain veneers need to be replaced every 15 to 20 years; composites last roughly half as long. But veneers done poorly are a different story altogether: They can lead to major and irreparable health consequences, including rotting teeth, gum infections and disease, TMJ disorders, and other chronic conditions, including unresolvable pain and degradation of the jawbone.

And the people seeking them don't have major defects, they just want what are really minor cosmetic tweaks. While a lot of dentists doing them sound like what we call among my people 'cowboys'.

I am even more, 'So glad I grew up when and where I did', when I come across this: going WHAT? WHAT? Erotic asphyxiation has become mainstream among under-35s. How did we get here?

I remember having a journo contact me about the history of this a few years ago and it used to be very very niche and usually only really emerged when a case came up of auto-erotic strangulation.

oursin: Fotherington-Tomas from the Molesworth books saying Hello clouds hello aky (Hello clouds hello sky)

I have been noticing, on my perambulations past the eco-pond in the park, that the goldfish are most definitely BAAAACK - either that time when they seemed to have gone they were just lurking in a sinister fashion out of sight, or else people have been dumping unwanted fishies in spite of the notices reprehending this practice.

Nevertheless, today I was charmed and delighted to observe DRAGONFLIES flitting, though in rather small numbers, so some of the larvae must have survived goldfish depradations.

Yay.

Have been unable to spot newts or frogs, but am not sure newts would be very visible in the somewhat murky water.

***

In other good news, I had dental hygienist session and general checkup this week, and my gums are in a positively praiseworthy state, which I did not entirely anticipate. Furthermore there is no work needs doing, which also I was not entirely expecting.

So it's just wait on the next phase of implant work.

***

In further health-related news, I have now got an audiology follow-up appointment the week after next.

***

And in, well, it is just possible this is just because it is such a niche area, after some months of silence on the reviewing/referreeing front, causing me to suppose I am way past my Sell-By date, have been asked to report on an article Within My Sphere of Expertise.

oursin: Photograph of a statue of Hygeia, goddess of health (Hygeia)

So, today I had the checkup, a month after the first round of extractions/placing of initial implant stuff, and it is all looking fine, wheeee????

So carry on, I need not avoid chewing on that side, I can leave off the medicated mouthwash (good, I think it has been affecting my tastebuds), and gently deploy a manual toothbrush.

For several months until the next round, as the bone needs to strengthen (it was a bit soft, apparently).

As I was also being nagged about having a hygienist session, while I was there I booked that, plus a general checkup, which I had been delaying on while all the other stuff was going on, but if it is going to stretch out to the crack o'doom, might as well get it done, and anything that needs seeing to, seen to.

Given that the paucity of NHS dental provision is becoming a cause of national horror, and people are resorting to all sorts of expedients, this article from an academic acquaintance of mine seems timely and apposite: ‘Monty, Bring the Blood Can!’ Pulling Teeth in Working-Class Lancashire, 1900–48

Interesting, because I would have anticipated, or perhaps not, more provision under Public Health Services following the revelations of the rates of rejections of recruits for the war in South Africa on the grounds of gross dental conditions. (Which did, though I'm not sure it's actually explicit in the article, lead to the School Dental Service though that was possibly also part of other OMG by beginning of C20th infant/child mortality has not declined anything like overall mortality, handwring, handwring, gawdsakery panic.)
