And in Dept, il ne manque que ca, for this week, I was obliged to make a phone-call to my GP practice because there is significant delay on getting a repeat prescription going on. Their site not helpful. Apparently my designated pharmacy has submitted an order which is awaiting approval. It would help if this sort of thing was indicated.

While in Dept, price of everything, value of nothing: Claude Monet's 'Iris' becomes most expensive artwork sold at auction in France, Sotheby's says

Yes, I am earwormed with Money and copy/pasting Monet to the words.

I observe that a) some of those links are dead and that b) horrors, I did not include the stonking version by the divine Smokey Robinson and the Miracles:

Dept of, author has form for being cringe-makingly awful: He has clearly done lots of research, but has chosen to put it at the service of creating a Wilde who is fatally less interesting and moving than the original.

Dept of, What, ONLY ONE: that thing (can't find it online, was in today's Guardian Life and Arts section about The Book That Changed Your Life. Let me sit down and start working on a list....

So, today I had a physio appointment at the far from eligible hour of 1 pm, what is this even, do these people not have lunch hours? also it was at the uphill all the way clinic.

Anyway, I got there in very good time, and was able to ascertain the bus stop that would actually take me in the right sort of direction for getting home.

(It was actually quite a nice walk past people's flowering gardens or council floral bits.)

And it was a very good and useful session, with a senior person as well as my usual physio, and I think we may be getting to some habit-changing things that might improve matters.

So after I had come out I went and caught the bus, which is one that goes across rather than up and down (so much of London Transport being designed on the principle of getting people into Central London and back out again) and it is a nice bus that goes past Highgate Cemetery, even if it is the newer bit, and the hospital, and okay, ends up at a slightly non-intuitive place behind Archway, but I was able eventually to locate the relevant stop for an onward bus.

And in other news, I have whizzed off an application for the Fellowship I mentioned and have had several kind offers from FB friends to provide letters of recommendation.

(I did not know about Gladys Knight and the Pips version of The Boy from Crosstown!)

Let us wish William Blake a Happy 267th, and again, as I posted a few years ago when considering how to celebrate this auspicious day, The weather is perhaps not quite what one would wish for playing Adam and Eve in the garden, as is reputed he did with his wife, but I suggested some alternatives, and so did commenters.

And for that festival of my friends across the Atlantic who may not, perhaps, be feeling in a thankful mood about the state of their nation, I am thankful for them and for all the good things their culture has given me over so many years.

(I know, I've had this one before)

Which I concede we need at this particularly lowering time of year, and falls on a day which for personal reasons has Connotations.

Well, I will make an effort and here is (naturally) the divine Smokey with More Love and More Joy:

Let's get into that Soulful Dress:

Maybe we could do this with Ginger and Fred, backward and in high heels:

Join The BeeGees Stayin' Alive through a vaguely 70s version of an Apocalyptic Wasteland movie:

So, Let's Have a Party:

Twist and Shout:

Jump:

And take some Time Out for Love:

Among my people we do not have Thanksgiving (just as we do not have Independence Day, for we were that from which independence was being sought...)

And it occurred to me to give thanks that we do not, because it seems to come along with a lot of associated stress and tension and potentiality for draaaaaammmaaaa. I daresay there are people who are coming together in family groups whether related by blood/DNA or not and having a peaceable and enjoyable, even harmonious, time together, but the impression one sometimes gets is that (though it is far from the only occasion involving obligate bringing together of potentially ill-assorted persons because FAMILY and TRADITION) Thanksgiving is when everybody gives thanks at the end of the day that nobody has done murder or very extreme mayhem.

I.e. my vision, and I may be entirely wrong, is quite the reverse of any lovely Hallmark/Norman Rockwell depiction.

Nevertheless, have some Sam and Dave:

Had it before, but it's worth bringing out again.

After the railway dance-party, I started thinking about other forms of transport:

Edwin Starr - 'Come on feet start moving' - for those Twenty Five Miles:

Martha and the Vandellas, however, preferred to Hitchhike:

The Hollies, however, are waiting hopefully at a Bus Stop:

They do not say, unlike the Who, whether it's a Magic Bus:

Songs relating to the London Underground: The New Vaudeville Band at Finchley Central:

The Kinks, Waterloo Sunset:

Leaving on a Jet Plane with Peter Paul and Mary:

Open up that sky, Big Bird, says Eddie Floyd:

I was thinking of doing one of my dance party music compilation posts and then I realised that very few songs about autumn or September are boppable.

Okay, I am pretty sure I remember doing something that would approximate to bopping to the Kinks' 'Autumn Almanac' ('Yes, yes yes yes yes yes') when I was but a young thing:

but srsly, most of them are in elegiac mode with falling leaves, summer is over, take it away, Dusty,

The Leaves Are Falling:

I have found some obligatory Motown: The Temptations doing 'September in the Rain' and 'Autumn Leaves':

And all the leaves are brown and the sky is grey, that's why they're California Dreaming, right? it counts?

oursin: Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing in his new coat (Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing)

Recently deceased, Barrett Strong, known for his work for Motown. Most famed for this - his writing contribution overlooked and contested - I prefer this stonking version by Smokey and the Miracles:

This is much less well known, but I like it:

He moved mostly to writing for other artists:

Notably, for the Temptations:

and

which was part of the Vietnam War-era politically-infused songs, like this for Edwin Starr:

But also:

And for Marvin Gaye (among other things):

Anyway, wotever, it is that slumpy bit of January, so here are some jaunty numbers with the hopes of perking you up.

I wasn't looking for this version of Nothin' Shakin' (But the Leaves on the Trees) but it is a fun retro take - though as it was recorded in Westgate on Sea, my memories of that seaside town are that it was caught in a time-warp well back in the 60s...

Northern Soul dancing to Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache:

The Breakaways, That's How It Goes:

Challenge: Jump for My Love: (is he good enough is he keen enough? is he worthy?)

Or, at least Take Some Time Out For Love:

Because it's the rules, something from the divine Smokey:

And cool down a little with some Slow Slow Twistin':

More and more:

Seconding the emotion:

Composing the song my heart hears

Go to the Go-Go -

There are many versions of this, but one of the best (and rather off his usual track)

Still got it - 2016 medley:

I am grateful for all of you, who light up my life.

I am also grateful for The Hedgehog Highway That Knits a Village Together:

Hedgehogs need space to create territories, forage and find mates. The compartmentalisation of land into private gardens is one of the causes of their disappearance from our landscape – they have declined by 90% since the second world war. More than 12,000 hedgehog holes have been created as part of the UK’s hedgehog highway network, and Kirtlington has one of the most creative routes on the map. Miniature ramps and staircases thread between gardens in this higgledy-piggledy place[.]

oursin: Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing in his new coat (Brush dancing)

Have been feeling lethargic and lackadaisickal most of the week, during which I had hoped to have written a report on a book proposal for an academic press. Suspect that they want rather more than: 'This will be a major contribution to the historiography, thoroughly researched, has read the relevant literature, author has solid track record', with maybe just a few minor points for consideration.

Let's hit the dance-floor instead:

Take it away Tina (who could I possibly be thinking of?)

I like the way this has been fitted to the movie:

If only one could be saying this:

Not getting on that Big Bird anytime soon:

And this one is for Wally the Walrus, who also Won't Go Home:

Can't push Wally round, Wally won't go

oursin: Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing in his new coat (Brush dancing)

Because I have further thoughts, and I've seen versions with new categories, and also I don't have any other ideas at the moment:

Something to wear: Sugar Pie Desanto - Soulful Dress

An animal: Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog

A day of the week: Blondie - Sunday Girl

oursin: Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing in his new coat (Brush dancing)

A Place: Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - The Legend Of Xanadu (or if you insist on a real place, Bobby Bloom, Montego Bay)

Dancing in time of plague...

Bring on the Rocking Pneumonia and Boogie-Woogie Flu

with 70s shirts and hairstyles.

Not convinced that these Pills hymned by Bo Diddley had any therapeutic intention:

Also not entirely persuaded that the Marvelettes have a double-blind tested Remedy here:

We understand that 98.6 is not in fact everybody's normal body temperature:

And here we may observe the BeeGees socially distancing and Stayin' Alive (in what does rather look like a post-apocalyptic wasteland, ahem)

oursin: Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing in his new coat (Brush dancing)

But this morning, Gold Radio woke me up with, after the monstrously depressing news headlines, Fontella Bass going 'Rescue Me':

A bit pointed, I thought.

So then I thought, well, what else might be on that play-list?

Aretha exhorting 'Think'?

Maybe, The Beatles suggesting that 'We Can Work It Out'?

Canned Heat saying, 'Let's Work Together'?

The Walker Brothers pleading 'You Don't Have To Tell Me Goodbye'?

Maybe, the hope offered by the Four Tops, 'Reach Out, I'll Be There'?

oursin: Brush the wandering hedgehog dancing in his new coat (Brush dancing)

O - Out of time, Chris Farlowe.

U - Unchained Melody, The Righteous Brothers

R - Reach Out, I'll Be There, The Four Tops

S - Sally Go 'Round the Roses, The Jaynetts

I - I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor

N - Nathan Jones - The Supremes
