UM5-EOSat is an Earth observation nanosatellite developed by Mohammed V University of Rabat (UM5R) in Morocco. The mission marked Morocco's first university-built satellites.
The satellite was developed by researchers at the Center for Research in Space Technologies (CURT/CURTS) at the Mohammadia School of Engineers, in collaboration with the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST) and the Royal Center for Space Studies and Research (CRERS).
UM5-EOSat carries an Earth observation camera for imaging Moroccan territory from low Earth orbit. The 3U CubeSat has a mass of less than 4 kg and dimensions of approximately 300 x 100 x 100 mm.
The spacecraft features a reprogrammable onboard system, allowing its functions to be modified or updated after launch. Operations are conducted by CURTS through dedicated ground stations. The acquired imagery and other mission data are intended for use by government authorities, universities and research institutions in Morocco.
It was launched on August 16, 2024, aboard a SpaceX Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, together with the university's UM5-Ribat satellite.
